I wrote about the benefits of the Anabolic Diet in the past. If you’re skeptic, experiment. Do a before-after test. Here are 5 things you should do before starting the Anabolic Diet.

1. Get a Physical Check.
Go to your doctor & ask for a complete blood test, which includes:

  • LDL levels (bad cholesterol)
  • HDL levels (good cholesterol)
  • Triglyceride levels
  • Testosterone levels
  • Fasting Blood Sugar
  • Uric Acid
  • Etc

The Anabolic Diet claims to control insulin sensitivity, decrease cholesterol levels & increase testosterone levels. A blood test is a good way to check whether this is true or not.

2. Measure Body Fat.
The Anabolic Diet forces your body to use fat for energy. This leads to less fat. Measure your body fat before starting. Your doctor can do this for you or you can use a fat caliper. Compare 2 months later.

3. Take Pictures.
It’s hard to be objective when judging your own physique. Pictures are a solution. Shoot pictures of yourself the day before starting & 2 months later. Look at the difference.

4. Know your Strength Stats.
Shouldn’t be a problem if you keep a training log. Increased testosterone levels equals more strength. Know your current max on the core lifts: Squat, Deadlift, Bench Press, Overhead Press, Bent-Over Barbell Row. Compare 2 months later.

5. Track Energy Levels.
Some people feel sluggish on high carbs diet, even if the carbs are whole grain based. I’m one of those people. You might be too. How do you feel on the Anabolic Diet? How is your sleep? How is your productivity? Keep a journal of your energy levels to track the difference.

Remember, it takes 2 months to fully experience the benefits of the Anabolic Diet. Do the above test and you’ll know if the Anabolic Diet is something for you or not.

Any alternatives to avoid Red Meat and still have a (pseudo-)anabolic diet?

    Rissam,

You need saturated fats. Lots of saturated fat on the Anabolic Diet. If you don’t eat beef, pork, lamb,… I doubt you can get the daily required saturated fat intake.

The Anabolic Diet doesn’t work with white meat. Your best replacement would be eggs. But you’ll need a lot of eggs to get your saturated fat intake (20+). Unless you can take this, I advise you to look for another dietary approach.

funny, I had all these checked before I knew I was going to start this regimen :)

total chol. is good but triglycerides are too high and my fasting glucose is high. basically my doctor said I am “pre-diabetic” and i have “metabolic syndrome,” lose weight, go on a lo-fat diet (!!!!). well, I told him something like “no, I am too fat and out of shape. when I was training before my accident in 2004 and eating a lot of fat and protein all of these numbers were perfect. I guess I’ll start that again.”

    so I did :)

I’m like you Mehdi in that a lot of high-GI carbs (pasta/rice are the worst) put me right to sleep. good thing I can do the carb-load on a weekend. last weekend I felt all bloated and sluggish even though I had low(er) GI carbs like whole oats and high-grain bread. bleah. “carb sensitive” doesn’t begin to describe me. Next weekend I will just do one day instead of both.

    good start.

I love red meat, but try to eat the leaner versions of it since too much sat fat will not be good. Especially since I eat 6 whole eggs a day.

Good thing my cholesterol will never be an issue. :)

42, I’m also doing one day carb loadings on the Anabolic Diet. Feel much better & more productive.

Too much saturated fat is indeed not very good unless you’re on the Anabolic Diet. I thought you were Jay?
