I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

5 months of SL5x5 but no weight gains

Postby Agenbite on Sat May 16, 2009 9:13 pm

Hello everyone. I'm 29 years old, 178 cm and 72.5 kg still. I started SL5x5 program last Christmas (previouly I barely practiced any sports at all) and these are my stats so far:

Squats & DL 87kg
Bench 60kg
Bb rows 52kg
OHP 38kg
Dips 10x with a 5kg dumbbell
Chin ups 10x with a 7.5kg dumbbell
Pull ups 10x

Well, when I started SL program I changed my diet completely. I take 6 meals/day, which includes lots of fruit and veggies and 150-160gr of proteins on average. Even though my look is slightly more muscular and my legs are definitely bigger my wheight hasn't changed so far. I don't know if I should start worrying or if as long as I can keep progressing in my lifts, this situation is perfectly ok.

Thanks.

If you are not gaining weight, you are simply not eating enough. Try to get at least 3500+ calories a day. If you are already doing that, try for 5000+
3-9-09--5'10" · 280lbs · 33yo · 33.5% BF
herf's log
Now= 292lbs - 33.5%BF
Squats 315lbs 5x5--BP 175lbs 5x5--DL 285lbs 2x5 OHP 135lbs 5x5
Goal for end of 2009 is 240lbs BW and 315lbs squat.

There's your answer then
More muscular and legs bigger - you've probably lost body fat as well
Hence no weight gain

Unless you need/want to put weight on - stick with what you are doing until you can no longer progress
Then start eating more.
If you need/want to put weight on - as herf says - eat more

As Mouse already stated, you seem to have lost body fat and gained muscle which balanced out your weight. So the number hasn't changed on your scales but your body composition is different so you now look more muscular. Well done! Now to start gaining weight you need to eat more, try to make sure most of it is quality whole foods. When you do start to see a shift on the scales you'll probably gain a little fat over time. This is expected since gaining only muscle while getting heavier is very hard to achieve.

You've done well so far and have made some good progress so just eat more from now on! Good luck :D

more protein. medhi said 1g/lb but if your not gaining weight try more. Up to 2g/lb even. See what your body responds too. in addition to eating more food

Protein won't make you gain weight really, it's just to help building/maintaining muscle (yes 5000kcal protein will make you gain weight, but you get my point).

You need to eat more. Eat every 3 hours + 1 gallon of milk a day =5000kcal/day. 5-7000Kcal/day and you'll weigh 80kg within 5 weeks.

Thanks to everyone for the answers.

I'm trying to eat more but I don't think I can eat that much in the short term. Anyway I rather get slight but continuos progress than going hardcore eating for some months and then quit (it has happened to me before when I got obssesed with something). It's just that I took for granted that I could gain weight easily after I started to work out and eating healthier (and nearly twice as much as I used to).
