I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

You don't need a squat rack for the bicep curls, just a box of Dunkin' Donuts and some coffee to dip them into.

This is such a good thread - so informative - thanks to everyone so far - thanks to this thread i've really got the pump.

Personally I think it should be part of the FAQ.

Free weights can be dangerous for beginners. Better to do even bicep curls on the smith machine.
That way you can also be sure that the weight was moving up in a straight line, which is always good.

I've been doing a bit of reflecting on my 7 months of weight weight training, and thought I'd share some of the lessons I've learned in my journey toward awesome swole-itude. So I present to you, mjh's rules for failure:

    1. If you're not isolating every single muscle in your body, you're never going to make any gains
    2. If you're not doing precisely the correct number of sets and reps, you're never going to make any gains
    3. If you're not working yourself to exhaustion every single day of the week, you're never going to make any gains
    4. If you don't use precisely the correct rest periods, you're never going to make any gains
    5. If you waste your time with warm-ups, mobility and recovery protocols, you're never going to make any gains
    6. If you don't use precisely the correct brand of protein, you're never going to make any gains
    7. If you don't consume precisely the correct ratio of protein/fat/carbs, you're never going to make any gains
    8. If you don't consume your food at precisely the right times of day, you're never going to make any gains
    9. If you're focusing on only one goal, such as gaining weight, losing weight, getting stronger, or improving athleticism, you're never going to make any gains
    10. If you chose to follow a workout program such as stronglifts 5x5, but don't customize it with extra exercises, extra days, rep ranges, progression methods and points of technique, you're never going to make any gains

Agreed, cos isolation exercises are the only way to ensure each muscle gets exactly the right amount of work it needs. only lazy people do compound exercises to try and work several muscles at a time - how lame is that? If you don't have time to give each muscle the attention it deserves, you don't deserve to have good muscles.

mjh wrote:2. If you're not doing precisely the correct number of sets and reps, you're never going to make any gains

Correct again. It's surprising how many people are unaware of the fact that different muscles respond to different reps/sets. Plus your abs are highly adaptable, so you need to change your ab exercises every 2 weeks or so.

mjh wrote:3. If you're not working yourself to exhaustion every single day of the week, you're never going to make any gains

Yes. Undertraining is for wimps.

mjh wrote:10. If you chose to follow a workout program such as stronglifts 5x5, but don't customize it with extra exercises, extra days, rep ranges, progression methods and points of technique, you're never going to make any gains

Come on, Stronglifts 5x5 isn't even a program... where's the bicep work? triceps? abs? traps? serratus anterior? the stapedius?
