I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Guys, i've got a PhD in sports science, so gather round and listen up and i'll share some secrets:

If you want to be able to punch like Mike Tyson then do lots of 2-inch (no lower) benchpress - 100% of the power of a punch comes from that last 2 inches. Similarly, if you want to sprint faster than Olympians, just do feet exercises (toe crunches, foot taps, foot waves, toes extensions, iso-lateral big toe flyes), because your feet are what touches the ground when you run.

I'm glad you guys posted this, as I play table tennis for the Antarctic Olympic Team and have been having huge disagreements with my coach about my training. He seems to want me to do exercises outside that utilise my whole body, but I feel it would be more beneficial if I just sat inside and worked my right hand.

I work my right hand every morning and every evening. I find that if you try to increase intensity you risk sacrificing endurance. This morning I experienced a soft deload, so I'm going to take a week off to recover from overtraining.

Be careful you don't leave it too long without training. This can lead to excessive stiffness after resuming activity.

I use my left hand

And i agree that increasing the intensity reduces the endurance!

I've gotten great results alternating left and right hands. It's a great way to keep those muscles confused!

yes alternating left and right is good, but it will create temporary im-balances in your forearms ! and you definitely don't want the ladies to see you with 1 arm bigger than the others (remenber the triceps-work - as an antagonist ndlr - on the morning workout!!).
the key here is to use a Mixed-Grip and alternate the pronated/supinated hand on a daily basis OR, if you're not a wuzz and do workout twice a day -> Hook-Grip.

Morning workout -> focus on intensity (or you'll mess up day-time recovery.. and you'll be late at work)
Evening workout -> focus on endurance

Whatever grip you use, don't forget to squeeze the bar.

i've tried chalk but really, I find that vaseline works much better...am I doing it wrong?

Also, I get funny looks in the gym, but I should just ignore it, right?

strength-focused people like us do not use chalk. Chalk makes your hand 'stiff' on the bar and reduces the tension in the forearms which is needed to hold the Bar in place.. resulting in less direct-concentric arm work => you're killing the workout !

Mike-Patrick Mitchell (PhD) said 'chalk the load, burn the load' and, while it doesn't mean much to common non-strength-focused people, it does mean something to us !! we focus on 'bursting' the load instead of 'burning' it ! Vaseline is ok for training but real competitors use egg-yolks / mayonnaise mix (a good balance of unsaturated/saturated fat is the Key to a good diet !

don't forget the diet !

They look at you funny? don't pay attention ! we know we do the real-stuff here.. focus on your workout and enjoy the results. I have been training for months/years using these techniques and, in the end, they ain't laughing no more ! they're even sooo jealous of my progress that they're trying to kick me out of the gym !

hell with them ! i can train at home !

hey guys, sorry this is off topic but...

I want to improve my golf game. However, I don't have a full set of golf clubs, so I can only use a putter and my granddad's old five iron. Also, I don't want to go to the golf course because it's too far away, expensive and sand makes me nervous, so I'm limited to practicing in my back yard.

So can anyone offer any tips?

I've heard that professional sports people use a technique called visualisation. Therefore, to get your game really going, get a comfy deckchair, sit in your backyard, put the old 5-iron in your hand and visualise the golf course. If you do this properly, you should be able to do all 18 holes without moving, but your game will improve no end.

I've heard that hand-stand push ups are really good for shoulder strength but am having trouble with my form.

Although I can stand on my hands, I find it very difficult to then do push ups and also I get shoe prints on the back of my hands. Help please...
