Any boxers here?

Postby sailo888 on Wed Oct 29, 2008 6:23 am

Was just wondering if theres any boxer in this community. If any, how do you like it? How is it with the 5x5 program? comments? :)

I want to get into it, kinda. First I am looking at buying a punching bag to release some stress :) but no idea where I should buy them or what price range is good? I tried googleing, so many styles and ranges from $150 to $1000 USD.

Any suggestions would be appreicated, thanks!

I wouldn't consider myself a boxer by any means, but I occasionally use a heavy bag with friends. I've got a 40KG/80lb BBE bag, I'd imagine that's the sort of thing to go for as a beginner, as it's quite versatile.

First I recommend you to do a trial in a Boxing Center, because boxing is harder than what people think. I saw a bunch of (pumped) guys doing a try out and they never came back. Don't buy stuff until your 100% sure you want to do boxing. If your ready to take some good punches and give some good punches then lets go.

Buy wraps and learn to do good wrapping (5$). Here is the beast wrapping in my opinion (Use 180'') :

Buy boxing practice gloves in leather with Velcro ( around 50$). Before training in a punching bag make sure you have the good stance and the proper technique. Then I suggest you a 100lbs punching bags because a too light one goes around and around. (About 250)

Buy jump ropes and keep your guard high. And if you fight don't forget your mouth piece. I can give you Muay-Thai websites but I don't know good websites that are only for boxing.

I have trained boxing for 5 months now, and have done SL5x5 for about 3 months

I love it. It is one heck of a workout. Doing StrongLifts will help you in ANY sport, but, that said, being 'boxing fit' is it's own unique thing, and you have to train it in and of itself seriously to get good at it.

Before you buy anything: check out a boxing gym, and do a single workout there.

Then, you will a) know whether boxing is for you (in my experience it was a bit different than what I expected), and b) the trainer will tell you what to buy, before you waste money on stuff you don't need.

Also: don't bother with a punching bag yet, if you want to be a good boxer. First, get to a boxing gym and learn how to punch. Otherwise, you'll simply learn & reinforce bad punching habits.

Ah, sorry John. It have been a busy few weeks for me. School is pain... keeping my regular routine is hard enough.

Whenever I have any extra time, i am going to look in it again! Yeah i hate it, i am either really really busy or really really BORED haha.
