I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

I did MMA and boxing for a little while, but couldnt keep it up along with my bodybuilding routine. Im interested in starting jiujitsu as soon as i get some money to be able to pay for classes.

I did amateur boxing at 55kg and won almost every fight by KO or TKO. I stopped 8 years ago. I would probably get ruined at 65kg because of my terrible reach, although my lean weight is 60kg, which could make for some interesting amateur fights. I've been toying with the idea of getting back into it. You certainly have no choice but to get fit or get hit.
I find MMA appealing, but my body just isn't suited for it, so I'll stick to getting all excited watching it on the TV :D

Namaste, where do you wrestle?

FFC in northbridge WA, under brian ebersole.

However, he has returned to the states, so I take BJJ and judo classes now, and nogi wrestling wherever I can fit it in.

I'm probably better off my back than on takedowns, so it would be insulting to pure wrestlers to call it wrestling :)

I looked for wrestling clubs in Melbourne and Gippsland for ages and didn't find any! My old man was an elite wrestler and my 'little' brother is practically his clone, so we were going to get him into it. Pity it's not so popular in Australia, especially not in more recent times (thanks to the 'Internet age').

BJJ is the way wrestling is moving these days anyway. It is clearly a very effective alternative to greko-roman as demonstrated by the worlds best Mixed Martial Artists.

I actually prefer freestyle wrestling to BJJ, but I don't want to give up my training days learning from a bjj/judo blackbelt to train wrestling. Only so many days in a week.

Hey guys,

Kind of new to this stronglifts.com forum, but been training BJJ for 8 1/2 years (brown belt by now) and Submission Wrestling as well. I actually joined in because I am looking for a good workout to develop my strength a little forward. I have a gym at my place and although it saves me alot of money, it doesn't have any dumbels or barbells.

How do you guys cope with shortage of material?

Also, I train BJJ & Sub Wrestling 4/5 times per week, which leaves me only 2 days to weight lift, I presume most of you have an intense training schedule as well, what are your experiences and which workouts worked best?

Sorry of the english is not the best ;-)

I fought tournament karate for many years in the late 70's and early 80's (yeah I know I am old) I trained in kempo and wouldn't trade the experience for anything. My 17 year old is a nationally ranked high school wrestler and has started taking MMA style training, I guess my days of being able to kick his ass are over! Family doesn't like it because of the bloody bouts on TV but I don't think anyone looking for trouble will ever be able to get the best of him. Quick advice; anyone with boys in or going into high school that offers wrestling get him into it. Greco Roman wrestling that is one awesome groundfighting system. His coach's not only teach the boys legal wrestling techniques but stuff to use off the mats for self defense. Jeez the kid is 145 lbs and bulletproof....I remember when that used to be me!

Sorry vixendan, I think BJJ is the best grappling style to take ;-) but wrestling is awsome, I have trained alot of wrestling (free style) and Judo, although I never competed in either W or JD, they are both awsome sports to take, specially when you are a youngster.

kimurense, I'm sure you are right, I watch MMA and these guys are awesome. When I competed groundfighting was like nothing. My son says I should try training MMA and after I stopped laughing I said not quite. I mean come on I am 49 yo. take it easy

Yeah here in Sydney its also hard to find submission wrestling clubs which i wanted to do. BJJ is easy to find, theres an official Gracie Barra in my neighbourhood.

I used to fight every week.
Martial arts were a mixed blessing, used properly you'll possibly do serious harm to your opponent used improperly they don't really work. If we're talking about fighting as opposed to some sort of sporting event or contest you need to look at the grappling styles, Ju - Jutsu or military styles like krav Maga.
Kick boxing etc.. are little use in a real fight unless you don't mind really hurting the other guy.
The hardest guys I ever fought were, in order of hard bastard
1. Ghurkas
2 Bare knuckle boxer
3. Guardsmen
4. coked up boxers - never ever box a boxer.
Male 37 - 5'9" - 240lb.
Deadlift 600+
Squat 500+
Pess 315
Bench 450+
these numbers will go up (except the bench....bloody shoulder joint)
"What is the point in being alive if you cannot do the deadlift?" - Jon Pall Sigmarsson.

What is the best type of fighting to learn for self defense? What I want to do is learn how to fight purely for self defense.

Persian, as someone said in a previous post, any style of martial art will work if you apply yourself. I have a friend who has done Akido for several years, and if you mess with him he will seal your fate. Same for a friend who competes MMA. My point is find a school that is easy to get to, reasonable in price and looks good (interview current students etc) On a personal note I don't know how old you are but when I was in my teens I received a black belt in Kempo, lived and breathed competition into my early twenties. Now I am struggling with a job that is not the career I should have been striving for in that time. My best friend went to law school and is now living large (and fighting MMA after taking it up at thirty). He made the correct chioce, you should to.

I've been doing karate (shotokan) for about four years. I also do a little BJJ, but at this point I'm basically just a heavy training dummy for any one with any actual skill :)
