I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

In many BB / Strenght forums there is a special subforum for fighters but I didn't find it here, so I just started a topic right here. ;)

I want to start kickboxing in a month or 2. I think I'm gonna love the fighting, it's a good way to get rid of some agression, my condition will no doubt improve, and it's always good to be able to protect yourself.

My questions to you..

What kind of fight sport do you do, for how long, why did you started it?
And do you have some tips for me, as a complete newbie fighter?

Spill it guys!

I train submission wrestling/bjj/judo.

I've had a c class shooto match, couple of submisson wrestling matches and a couple of gi tournaments.

I've been training for about 2.5 to 3 years, I can't remember.

If you stick with it, get ready for a new obsession, and lots and lots of injuries/pain/fun :)

Wow, wrestling always looked likes fun to me. However, it isn't very popular in the Netherlands, so there aren't any school nearby. That's a shame, I would have loved it I guess.

3 years, that's quite a lot..

Didn't it interfere with your lifting Namaste?

Yes, it did.

I had to cut my fight training down to 2 days a week when I first started stronglifts to try and get my numbers up. Now that they are at an 'ok' level, I have cut down to 2 days lifting and 3 days fight training, 1 or 2 rest days a week.

I practice Thaiboxing on Fridays. It's a nice combination with SL. I practiced Wing Chun kung fu for about 6 years. I liked that better, Thaiboxing is a lot more brutal, less elegant, and not per se more effective.
I'd rather be the quick fox than the lazy dog.

All martial arts are definitely very effective otherwise they wouldn't exist. I mean a master in any martial art is going to be able to quickly disable an attacker who as is usually the case just intimidates people. I box and kickbox with my friend. He's been in TKD his whole life and I have been boxing with my dad and friends my whole life.

@Namaste I've been interested in Judo forever, I just haven't foudn teh time to get any lessons. I wrestled back in High School and was always amazed at how effortless the throws looked in judo.

Alright, I understand. It's just what you want to most, being strong or being a good fighter I guess than.. I'll just practice once a week I guess. I aspire a strong body more than very good fighting skills. However, things can always change.

Nice.. Haha, Thaiboxing would be just my thing then! ;) You are definitly right though, it can be brutal (as far as I have seen :p). Don't you get a lot of injuries from Thaiboxing? And are you having trouble with integrating it with your current lift programme?

Thanks for all the replies so far guys, I wouldn't have guessed that there where already so many fighters at Stronglifts. People just always seem so decent around here. :)
(No I'm not saying that fighters aren't decent, but you catch my drift ;))

I boxed for a couple of years. A buddy ran a gym during the period, so I was able to work out and get training at no cost, so long as I was wiling to spar with the "real" boxers that worked out in the gym. It was alot of fun and always a good workout. One thing, if you think you're in decent shape right now, you're going to find out how bad your cardiovascular fitness is quickly :) A three-minute round takes alot out of you until you get your stamina up. The first couple of weeks, I'd end up in the bathroom puking after 3 three-minute rounds, if I managed to make it that far! Good luck, and enjoy it!

Hahaha, this post just put a smirk on my face. You did have a good deal there btw, no cost for training or fighting.

Hehe, the beauty of this all is.. I suck in cardio. I'm fat and have no stamina at all. I'm trying to work on that first for the coming two months, since my goal is also to lose fat. But hey.. No pain, no gain, right? ;)

Bujinkan for about a half year on and off. Got a break in it because of the army, or what passes as one in here at least. Going to continue it in the fall when my school starts again, also planning on starting to practice krav maga. My brother trained that for a few years and liked it a lot, too bad he hasn't had time to do it anymore because of all the travelling and family. Otherwise I'd definitely spar with him. Well, I still have two friends who kickbox to humiliate.

This made me smile :) I'm the same way with boxing, but my friends usually don't box they kickbox, which is admittedly much more of an even fight since i never learned "proper" kicking technique and they have all been in tkd or muay thai. I got dropped the other day with a front kick to my chest. didn't even see it. Isn't that how it usually goes?

Haven't really had a proper chance yet, I'm afraid. We've been meaning to go sparring but there isn't really any places nearby and I don't own any gloves. Would feel a bit too 'ghetto' to just go at it in our backyard with bare knuckles.
Although, there was this one time when we were *ahem* drinking.. and one of us got the great idea to start a friendly tussle. :D Anyway, since I was better in ground game than my friend, at one point I got him to a full guard? (sort of like this http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/c ... 1guard.png ) and started drive an elbow through his temple at full force until I realized at the last second 'oh yeah, friend, don't hurt' and managed to slow it enough not to smack him unconcious. (A bit of a drawback from training purely self defence with the mentality that if I ever use it, I won't hold nothing back)

Hahahaha, fight with friends own.
I usually fight with my 3 year older brother, I love it.

I'll be owning him soon.. ^^

Yeah, it was an awesome deal. Unfortunately, liability insurance eventually put him out of business. You have to carry a load of the stuff for a venture like a fighting gym. I missed it for a long time, but at this point, I'm getting a bit long in the tooth to be trying to lay beat-downs on 18-25 year olds :)

Get some roadwork in, and then get in some more roadwork. Either way, you're going to get gassed in the short term and will most likely revisit whatever meal you had before you got to the gym. That stops after a while, though

Everyone thinks they'd love fighting til they get punched in the face. ;)
Fair play to you for taking it up though, and best of luck.

I did boxing myself, but gave it up after a year and a half. I liked it, but not enough to give it the devotion it deserves.
Nowadays i'm happy watchin it on tv
