I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

PHP dev here, been doing it fulltime for 5 years, and as a part-time freelancer for 2-3 years before that. Working in the e-learning field now, so able to do a little more 'blue sky thinking' than just coding all day, which is good 'cos I'm sick of coding :)

ASP.NET C# the last 3-4 years. Have done a little of everything the last 15 years (Lotus Notes, PL/SQL, C, C++, VB..). Also into SEO but more of a side thing helping some friends businesses.

Wasn't my major in college but took alot of courses. COBOL, FORTRAN... Long time ago :)

I don't do as much developing as I used to- more of a Program Manager now working with the customer. Still try to stay on top of things...

graphics driver developer

work in C and assembler, with occasional python scripts

phd in computer science, taught theory and algorithms at universities and wrote papers for a while, but needed stability and benefits

graphics is fun, but big corps have a lot of bureaucracy and politics

I manage a team that uses aps.net/c#. OOP hurts my head. Go procedural!

I am hard core SQL though. Best language on the planet. Why? Because sooner or later almost all data ends up in a SQL database.

I'm currently busting my butt in school for my CS degree and am close to graduating with magna cum laude. I'm also one of the CS fellows here at school and almost considered double majoring CS and Mathematics, but just stuck with the Mathematics minor.

In class I've learned and used C++, Java, SQL, and some ASP.NET, C# and Unix.

I also work at the web development office at school. I started out working with CSS and HTML at the beginning of the year, but over the summer they had me learn Django and I've been working with that since.

I still have to come up with a cool idea for a program to write for my thesis. I really want to do something that people will find useful, but its hard finding something significant enough that people will use.

I started working after completing my undergraduate degree (Comp.Sci). I'm not the greatest of academics so I was very happy to start working and getting out there.
With the current exchange rates it works out to around $70k. The dollar is cheap at the moment so for my age it's not as much as it may sound.

Programmer here. Did a Bachelor in Comp Sci a while ago, and I finish with my Master's at the end of this semester.

I've worked with php, jsp, and java a bit, but now I'm a lot more focused in using .Net technologies, so it's mostly C# or VB.net with a good amount of SQL thrown in there.

While some problems are enjoyable to solve, a lot of others are mundane and redundant, making for extremely boring periods. I can't imagine coding for a long period of time though. I'd rather switch to something else.

I have bachelor degree in CS from N.C. State. I got into the admin side (BASIS) of the SAP game back in boom time before I ever got a programming job. The knowledge from my degree does come in handy and makes me a much more valuable asset. I've been able to write a ton of utilities in the SAP's own language of ABAP/4 for our group and even help out when the other programmers get backed up.

Now I'd say programming is more of an enjoyable hobby I can do at work :)

can't go wrong with the classics.... C programming language by Kernighan & Ritchie

python is so fun it's hard for a python book not to be fun...

for a serious challenge with serious payoff, ML for the Working Programmer.... some may think this a joke... but it's not. If you master ML, you will have a new view on programming and a skill that has some demand but is relatively rare (I know of at least 3 local shops/teams that work in ML).. this book has a lot of great projects in it.
