I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Anyone deadlift with squat shoes?

Does anyone here deadlift with squat shoes? If so, what's the height of the heel on the shoe?

I tried doing RDLs in squat shoes with a 1.25" heel. Felt very different compared to doing the exercise in barefeet.

I do.

When I change in the locker room, I put on my AddiStar olympic style weight lifting shoes, the silver and black ones with the little wood wedge in the heel.

I do not take my shoes off, nor change to different shoes between different lifts.

If it was a competition, I would be more careful to consider my footwear.

I just wear my Chucks for all lifts.

I've thinking about getting some lifting shoes, but I'm too cheap and a big fan of Chucks.

There is nothing wrong with chucks.

I bought some flat-soled lifting shoes. Then I got some chucks for general use.

Now I use the chucks for lifting. They are great.

Yeah, yeah, Chucks are great. I get it.

I have weight lifting shoes, so I'm not about to squat in Chucks. And I like deadlifting in barefeet, so I'm not about to get Chucks for that either.

So, back to the original question. Barry, do you know how tall the heel is on your shoes?

Don't have them with me today, I can measure tonight, but I think less than 2 inches.

I go back and forth between barefoot/flat-soled shoes and o-lifting shoes. I have the old VS Athletics with a ~4cm heel, which is about as tall a heel you'll find on any shoe. They're okay enough for squats (although I'd prefer less heel), but deadlifting is pretty difficult -- there's actually a pretty substantial difference between what I can pull barefoot and what I can pull with the shoes on.

I usually go with low tops. More ankle flexability.

I bought some Rogue do-wins and had them shaved down to 1/2 an inch. I use them for all my lifts. And yes, they work great for deadlifts.

I know the Chucks are popular with the kids, but seriously, get a good pair of weightlifting shoes with a low heel. They're worth it.

I imagine your Do-wins came with a similar heel to mine - I think the only difference is that mine are branded Pendlay Barbell while yours are branded Rogue. Did you try deadlifting in them prior to shaving them down?

Who did you have shave it down? And how did they do it? I guess they slice a wedge off the sole, thicker near the heel and thinner near the toe? How much did it cost?

I never deadlifted with the standard 3/4 inch heel because the shoes were all fucked up when they arrived. One heel was easily 1/4 inch higher than the other. I just took them to the cobbler rather than wait two weeks for an exchange. I'm not a cobbler, I don't know the exact methods of lowering a heel, but it only cost me ten bucks.
