I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Friday May 8 Workout "A"

Squat 5/5/5/5/5
70#

Bench Press 5/5/5/5/5
75#

IRs 3xF
4/4/3

Push Ups 3xF
5/1/3

Rev Crunch 3x12

Looking at my log it looks off that my bench press was 5# more than my squat, but squat goes up 15# per week, and bench only 5 or 10.

Push Ups: My wife and I do them outside the "fish tank" where all the spandex cardio queens do their stuff. I guess resting and watching this one woman messed up my second attempt and I was only able to get one full push up. Better take my wife's warning and keep my eyes to myself.

I am excited for next week where my overhead press starts at 60# on Monday (new personal record :) ) and ends with 65# on Friday (another personal record :D ).

I'm probably lucky I work out at home or I'd be continuously distracted.

I agree with you on the overhead press. At times I think I'll never make any more gains with them.

I was just thinking I need to do this as well. Nice to hear someone recommend it, but I'd also like to be told why it may be a horrible idea just to get both sides.

Congrats in getting started Barry. You and I are at roughly the same spot in the SLB protocol. Good luck to you!

Monday May 11 Workout B

Squat 75#
5x5

Overhead Press 55#
5x5
New Personal Record!

Dead Lift 95#
5x2
Yes I know, but I felt so good I had to go for two sets. Should have done 5x5, looking back.

Pull Ups / Chin Ups
30# assist chin = 4
20# assist chin = 1
30# assist pull = *zero* - but I tried like heck!

Prone Bridges 3x30 sec

Great workout! Felt strong. The gym was crazy crowded.

Wed May 13 Workout A

Squat 75 lbs
5/5/5/5/5

Bench Press 80 lbs
5/5/5/5/5

Inverted Rows
6/3/3

Push Ups
4/5/5
I found that if I start on the ground instead of in *top of push up position* I can get more, one more maybe, but more.

Rev Crunch
3x12

Left work early for an eye exam (his and hers). My wife treated herself to a really cool pair of wrap-around prescription sunglasses. Then hit the gym a tad early. The gym was empty!

Friday May 15 Workout B

Squat
Zippo!!! And I like squats best!
Last night, watching either Bones or Gray's Anatomy, two shows I don't like, I got up and felt a stabbing pain in my right knee. My knee quickly swelled up and was hot to the touch. Went to bed with 800mg of Ibuprophen with hope for the best in the morning. Woke up with a very stiff and somewhat swollen knee.

Sometimes the gym is safer than your own home. No squats for me tonight. :x

Overhead Press
60 lbs
5/5/5/5/5
This is getting interesting. My last set was a little shaky, but I got all with good form.

Dead Lift
105 lbs
5/5
Sorry, I can't do just one set, and it felt good, even on a tender knee.

Pull Ups / Chin Ups
30 lbs assist Pull Ups 3
30 lbs assist Chin Ups 3 for 4, and 2 for 3

Prone Bridges
Ok, I did these on my hands and toes. Not because it was the right way to do them, but because my lively wife was doing them that way. She is almost always better and more careful in form than I am, so I just presumed that was the correct way to do them. It was not until I read her log that I discovered that I am more of a monkey see monkey do...

Monday May 18 Workout A

Squat
80 lbs 5x5
My knee is feeling better, and the four day rest gave me more power.

Bench Press
85 lbs 5x5
Uneventful

Inverse Rows
7 for 7
3 for 5
4 for 5

Push Ups
7 / 6 / 5

Rev Crunch 3x12

Good workout.

Wednesday May 20 Workout B

Squat 85
5x5
Felt good and steady.
Some 30-something guy (yeah, and he was BIG) was using the power cage next to my wife and I, and was squatting SIX 45 pound plates with great form! Between sets he would look over to us and say "the squat is the best exersize of all!" He was right!

OH Press 65
5x5
How best to sum this up...shaky, wobbly, pushed the weight up by shear will power. :)

Dead Lift 115
70# 1x5
115# 1x5
Rounded my back on the last one, and my wife was quick to let me know!

Pull Ups / Chin Ups
30# assist chin ups 5 / 4 / 2

Prone Bridges 3 x 30 sec

Had a great workout. What amazes me most is my wife is setting new personal records every day.

Friday May 22 Workout A

Squat
90# 5x5

Bench Press
90# 5x5

IR
5 / 2 / 4

Push Ups
7 / 5 / 3

Reverse Crunch
3x12

It was a quick workout before the vet appointment. As it turns out, our 16 pound male black long hair cat bit our 12 pound female tabby on the hind quarters. She needed to have the wound cleaned and a drip inserted. She is now locked in our bedroom until the elizabethean collar (cone head thing) can be removed. Our house is never quiet. :|

As a cat vet I have to applaud your priorities in taking your cat in to have a drain put in for her abscess. Although I must say maybe you should get your 16# cat into the gym with you to get a couple of those pounds off.

It looks like you and your wife are getting into the swing of things. Keep up the good work!

Tuesday May 26
Work Out "B"
Workout Number 15

Squat
95# 5x5

Over Head Press
70#
5/5/4/5/5
Oh my God this is heavy!
The failure to get 5 reps on the third set was pure MENTAL. I let doubt and pain get to me. Like either Bobu or Gargoyle said, OH Press is part mental, beating through the pain, pushing the weight up with shear will power. But, crap, next Monday I have to push through 75 pounds...bring it on!

Dead Lift
120# 5 reps
130# 5 reps
This is 25 pounds less than body weight. Patience, Barry, five pounds at a time...

Chin Ups
30# Assist
5 / 4 / 3

Prone Bridges
Wobbly at best. The 130 pound dead's killed me, followed by an all out effort on chins.

Hey Barry. Looking good.

Just a clarification for you, if I am not mis-reading you. You should repeat your 70 lb OHP set because you didn't make 5x5. Not go on to 75 lbs.

Keep it up.

Yes, you are right, it is better to repeat the 70 lb and have good form. I had to "push off" with my legs to get the last rep of each set, so it was a cheat rep. Thanks for the encouragement.

What a coincidence-I live in New Providence, it's a great small town. I grew up in Whitehouse Station before it became so developed - was surrounded by cornfields.
I would miss the Jersey shore too if I ever moved away. I think I would always need to live on a coastline. The ocean is too important to me not to visit it periodically. How far is Portland from the coast? What are the biggest differences that you have noticed between NJ and Oregon?

As my boys get older, I would love to rent an RV and travel across country each summer.

Ooops......forgot this was a forum about weightlifting :D You are kicking my butt on OHP. I JUST got 70lbs today. Have only been trying for WEEKS! Stupid lift
