Yes, the fractional plates (two-1/4, two-1/2, two-3/4, and two-1 lb plates) are for the press. I can do 70, but not 75...so maybe 70.5, then 71 lb, then on up?
No contraction, the belt increases your inner abdominal pressure. It just allows you to have something to "push" against, giving more confidence maybe. You take a big breath, adjust the belt till snug, let the air out and re-adjust one hole tighter. When you take a big breath your core feels really tight, because you are being constricted.
The belt is NO replacement for core work though.
