I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

But you did it! Congratulations!
I felt the same way, on one of my last reps, wasted, eyes almost closed, then bug eyed, pushing with sheer will, I got the bar up and racked. my wife says: "remember to breath" Breath?! I was just trying to keep my head from exploding!

Thanks! Squats are even worse. I try not to look at myself in the mirror. I can make some ridiculous faces on the last reps..at least I would go down laughing!

Barry101's Training Log

Postby Barry101 » Mon Jul 13, 2009 4:55 pm

Too many days off again, well it's summer and so much to do outside!

7/13
Squat
220lbs 4,3,4,4,4 Could not get a 5th rep on any set but depth and form was still good. Deload and take another run at it!

OHP
115lbs 5,5,5,4,4 Ran outta gas on last rep on fourth set, hit myself in the nose last rep of fifth set, but no damage! At least I know the bar is close to my face! The first three sets were solid. Much better than before the deload. No arching of the back even on the 4th & 5th set.

DL
265 1X5 Ah, first time in a long time I got all 5 reps on a new weight w/out stalling!

Pull ups...been doing these at home. Installed a pull up bar in a doorway yesterday. Do three or four several times a day. Probably did twenty total last night. Will continue to grease the groove.

Ab work tonight, prone bridge etc

Good workout. I had a little stomach virus Sunday. Did not feel "bad" this morning, maybe a little dehydrated. I felt better as the workout progressed. Stall on squat reps may have been part of that. Anyway the deload worked really well at 180lbs so I expect another will produce the same results.

Still pleased with my progress. These are tough workouts for a newbie!

Only 20 pounds off of the body weight squat, way to go!

Agree on the OHP, I also find it awkward to arch the back, then gust as the bar passes your head, you have to "throw" your body forward to get the bar under your shoulders. It is easy with the empty bar, but hard when lifting near your max - and a 115 pound load is very impressive!

265 pounds on the dead lift for reps - that is cool - and must look cool with the bar starting to bend.

Great workout coming off an illness that effects your electrolites and water balance. That is one tough workout when you are feeling great! Congratulations!

Good approach on the squats.
Take your time, sneak on them slowly and before you know it, that weight is yours !

Don't sweat too much about OHP, everybody is struggling with it ;)
(which does not mean you should not feel sorry, but it helps to know you are not alone :D )

I just had "one of those days". BAD hip mobility today. Could not get my hips to loosen up no matter what. Bent over working on daughters car last night and up late afterwards. Tired and tight is no way to lift! Anyway...glad it was "A" workout day, deads would have destroyed me!

Squat
200lbs 5X5 Felt like 215lbs  . You expect to come in, deload and have it be a tiny bit easier! Not the case today. A real struggle.

Bench
160lbs 5X5 Not sure if I should move on or not. Last rep on last two sets barely made it up but the form was okay. May repeat just to make sure I got it and give my body a chance to catch up. Def a progression from the last workout.

Inv Row
Tried feet on a bench again. Could not touch so switched back to feet on the floor. Will probably stick with first set feet on a bench, last two sets feet on floor. I'll see if I can progress this way. I feel like I may be loosing ground here plus a lot of fatigue today. By the time I got this far I was pretty much out of energy!

Dips
5,5,5...Much harder than the first day. Stretched and was outta there. I'll add ab work tonight if I get a chance...but I have more car work to do!

I am tired. I've been doing pull ups at home at night. This is making me SORE! At least I know it's working though! My forearms, triceps and shoulders are so sore and tired after todays workout, I can hardly move! Now if I can manage not going to sleep at work! :P

Oh yea, almost forgot, talked to guy about SL a month ago at the gym. He was interested in squats and noticed I was always doing them. Saw him today and he's read the ebook and has just begun 5X5! Cool!

It is hard to work out, after you had what equaled to a work out. Credit for not skipping a day, and pushing through it.

Really good bench number! Holy cow, you are closing in on a body weight bench!

Spreading the SL doctrine, and making converts! But be careful, there are only so many power racks...

Great log! I like reading about all that mobility work you're doing. I have the same problem, I'm so tight it can sometimes really affect my lifts, so reading about other people doing drills is a real kick in the ass. Great numbers, too - you're where I hope to be in a couple months. Good luck!

@ Barry06
But be careful, there are only so many power racks...

There are two! The only piece of equip I ever wait for is, you guessed it "Bench Press"

@ Shogun
I like reading about all that mobility work you're doing. I have the same problem,

I kinda stopped my off day work for a couple of weeks to catch up on some rest. All seemed to be going well until this AM. I'll hit the off day workout tomorrow and post results. Then hit workout B on Friday if I can squeeze it in. I think my mobility will come back quickly!

7/16
As the day passed yesterday, the right side of my upper back started hurting. I think I may have gone too low on a couple reps of dips. I still do not have a good sense of how low I am so I've been going as low I can depthwise. I'll have someone watch me on these next workout.

Did some tennis ball and roller work last night, that helped. Went to bed...slept through the alarm and missed my off day workout! I guess I really needed the rest so no worry there. I feel somewhat refreshed today and my back feels better too.

I have one other work related travel meeting that has not been confirmed for tomorrow morning. I am crossing my fingers it does not happen so I can do workout B and leave my weekend free. Otherwise I'll have to squeeze it in Sat or Sun. I'm sick of missing my third workout each week. I think two a week is not enough to get the progress I want. I feel like I may be losing some strength in between sessions.

7/20
Tired and just not there mentally today!

Squats
205lbs 5,5,5,5,5 Every set was an all out effort physically and mentally.

OHP 3,4,0

I had nothing today, no energy, no strength. Just felt terrible the whole time. Packed it up and went to work. I'll repeat workout B on Wednesday w/ same weights. It has to get better, this is a little frustrating. The past two workouts have been horrible.

Don't worry too much about it, those days happen and there will be more down the road.
Just make sure there are a lot more good days ;)

Rest, eat, sleep and then attack it again.

Like H said, there will always be ups and downs.

Just don't end up like Dave Tate ( http://www.tmuscle.com/free_online_arti ... eath_squat ) where Coach Tate drove to WalMart to purchase a gun to once and for all end the pain.

7/22 Repeat of Sucky workout on 7/20...

Squat
205lbs 5,5,5,5,5 Felt normal HEAVY today. 185lbs is where it ususally begins to feel heavy to me now. But the last two workouts it was unusually heavy. So, I worked on form i.e. sitting back, depth, glute activation and experimented with a couple of grip widths. One of the wide grips I tried was awful! Just wanted to see if there was a more comfortable place on the bar for my hands. I'll stick with what I've been using.

OHP
115lbs 4,3,2,2,2 Not sure what to do here. First set was actaully 5 but #5 looked like hell. I'll give this weight one more shot. My arms are tired from the pull up work I've been doing at home. This may be affecting this lift. I think I may need fractional plates to progress from here too. Probably my fav lift but can't get past 115!

DL
275lbs back began to round on rep 4. So 1X3 on this one. I should have no problem on getting this next time. Just a minor breakdown in form/concentration. On warm ups, I was suprised that 225lbs did not feell that heavy. That's usually where I start to feel stressed.

Pull ups
4 hammer grip , 4 Chins, 4 Hammer. This was pretty good considering my arms and shoulders were shot at this point. I had to make myself do them. My brain is begging me to stop the pain!

Prone Bridge
3X60sec (Each set alternating limbs raised 15 seconds). Shaking like crazy, and dripping sweat on the last set. Brain is ready to leave the gym! Body is ready TOO!

Stretched and DONE!
