I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Body Fat: Calulate vs Measure

I have seen many calculators on the internet that claim to be accurate (ones that claim 100% I completely disregard) but some, like this one http://www.davedraper.com/bodyfat-calculation.html, seem more accurate and claim to be within 3%. I have actually put this equation into an Excel sheet where I track my progress so that it updates whenever I enter new info. I figure as long as I am consistent with how a track it, my result and goals will be constant and on target too.

But out of curiosity, I was wondering what others though particularly about this equation. Those of you that have calipers (I do not) i would appreciate your input on the result of this equation vs your caliper.

Regards,
Greg

I use a tape measurement method from US Army which involves measuring waist and neck. Then height gets added into the equation to calculate bf%.
From there lean mass can be deducted.
See here for an online version:
http://www.linear-software.com/online.html

Formula:
BF%=495/(1.0324-0.19077*(LOG(waist-neck))+0.15456*(LOG(height)))-450
(measurements in cm, there is also a version for inches but I am not using that ;) )

I use the same approach as you, consistent way of measuring and tracking progress.
Aside the two mentioned parameters, I also keep track of arms, thighs and chest on an almost monthly basis to see how things evolve ;)
I prefer to be called 'H' ;)

Age: 41 / Height: 180cm/5ft 11" / BW: 87kg/191lbs
