I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Box Squat and Front Squat on same day

I've been doing Stronglifts 5x5 Beginner for the past couple of months, before that I was doing a split workout of sorts but the gains dried up from that and I decided to switch to a full body workout and found Stronglifts (thankfully).

I've been doing box squats 5x5 every workout, I got up to 80kg below parallel but didn't like my form coming off the box so I've switched to a box just above parallel until I'm happy with my form then I will lower the box (and the weight), I am currently at 95kg on this box.

I just found this article on T-Nation and was wondering how it would fit into the Stronglifts program with some slight modification.

I know it is a bodybuilding workout however I thought I could do the high box squat at 2x5, increasing the weight every workout and 3x5 front squat, again increasing the weight every workout as per stronglifts.

My reason for lifting is to get bigger and stronger, I don't want to compete in competitions so the back squat isn't a must do exercise (unless someone can tell me otherwise). I like the idea of box squatting a higher weight than the front squat first to get the body used to heavy weights and for a mental edge knowing I can move that much weight before I do the front squat.

Has anyone heard of this/ done anything like this before or see any reasons why it would be good/bad?

And does anyone have trouble keeping themselves from standing up on bent over rows?

Sure, go ahead & mix whatever you want to - but realise that it will not be SL 5x5 anymore.

Seriously though, if you are still making gains on the beginner program, don't mess with it. It is put together that way for a reason. When you deload three times on the squat & find it very difficult to progress, then you're an intermediate - you can choose an intermediate program that suits you. That time front squats can be added suitably.

As for the rows, if you need to stand up, the weight is heavy for you - you're essentially doing a deadlift instead of a row. Deload.

I will be doing 5x5 squats and keeping the rest of the program the same. I am reasonably tall and have trouble with back rounding on squats so I think that box squats will help my hip mobility and PC while the front squats will help my core strength and allow me to squat deep with a straight back. I am also doing mobility stretches, foam roller etc.

With the rows it is more a fatigue issue, the standing up comes late in the last set, I can do the other sets and reps with my torso almost stationary during the lift. What I am after is tips/techniques to help keep my torso down with heavier weights.
