I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Some impressive deads there bflo! Nice work! So a belt really makes a difference? I've never used one. Not sure when I should consider getting one. Also, did you use anything to get your hands through unscathed?

All y'all-

Thanks guys, it was a good night last night to say the least.

Adam, nothing more than climber's chalk for the last set. I really don't know what to attribute the clean bill of health to, as my hands have been beat to death recently. Though, now that I reflect on it, I didn't DL for assistance work last night so that's 40 lifts @ 280...that might have had something to do with it.

As to the belt, like I said it's my first time wearing one. The results were quite noticeable. Wendler mentions in 5/3/1 that he advocates wearing a belt all the time (of course at his weights, I would too). I suppose the realization that one needs the belt is an individual thing. I would give it a try on your heavier lifts and see what the experience is like.

Do you think the belt will help you lift heavier or does it help with preventing injury at higher weights?

Bobu-

We'll see. I tend to think that it will be a help on the DL and Squat...possibly help on the Press and do nothing for the Bench.

It certainly helps a lot on squats & DLs. When you can positively push your abs against the belt, the getting out of the hole is much easier & smoother.

Damn that's some good work!

Why do you think the belt helped? That's interesting that you liked it that much. But don't tell too many people...lol...

Hey Bflo. Funny, the amount of people who told me to avoid wearing a belt as much as possible! Mind you, I'm not lifting the amount you are (not lifting anything at the mo  ).

11/6/09

5/3/1 4th Cycle

Bench Day:
45 lbs 2x5
95 lbs 1x5
135 lbs 1x5
150 lbs w/s 1x5
170 lbs w/s 1x3
190 lbs w/s 1x4
Maybe a little more ass in the air than I would like but the 4th one went up and that's a new high for me.

Assistance Work:
Floor Press - 150 lbs 8x5

Circuit - Dip/Chin/Push-Up 8x5
I go, then HRH goes...until done (or dead, which ever comes first).

Now that's an arm pumper for sure, though my elbows don't like me too much at the moment.

Kib- I'll try to keep the push-ups in the mix...though I need to get used to them as my shoulders fet not so good as I did them.

James- The belt gave me something concrete to push against. I try my best to push the belly out but there is little in the way of feedback. With a belt the feedback is immediate and very noticeable.

Willie- I have heard good and bad on the belt issue. Right now I'm a believer. Hope you're able to get back under the bar soon.

190 lbs w/s 1x4
Bflo, in the 4th cycle you're lucky to get 2 reps in place of 1. You getting 4 obviously means that the program is doing it's job of making you strong.

That arm circuit is a killer - so who came out on top and who ended on the floor?

11/8/09

5/3/1 4th Cycle

Squat Day (3rd week)
45 lbs 2x5
135 lbs 1x5
185 lbs 1x5
205 lbs w/s 1x5
230 lbs w/s 1x3
255 lbs w/s 1x5
This felt so much better than the last few sessions. I wore a belt and that made a bit of a difference, not quite as much as on the Deadlift. There was a 6th in there...I think.

Assistance Work:
Walkouts - 365 lbs 2x30 seconds
Oof, that's heavy

Box Squats - 205 lbs 2x20
That's a long 25 minutes...

..and done.

Had a massage on Saturday and the masseuse made interesting observation. As she worked out the upper back and shoulders she asked if I was still rolling as she felt the muscles were tighter and had a gravelly (lumpy/bumpy) feeling to them. I told her that I had given my roller to my son to take to college and had not made a new one...so I had been without one since early September. As she worked on the the legs she said it was even more noticeable.

As soon as the session was over, I was off to Home Depot for the PVC pipe and duct tape, then to Target for a yoga mat. I now possess a lovely roller, all for the cost of $15.00...I can't believe I waited so long to make a new one. I'm a lazy SOB at times...

Nice job Bflo! I'm a big fan of walkouts! And, I've still never used a roller despite all the good advice. I think will have to submit to the power of the roller.

Getting a professional massage is pretty nice isn't it? I think that's going to be on my Xmas list.
I was reading up on belts and although it's tempting I think I'll hold off for now. Although I have lofty goals for my deadlift I think I'll continue to train without a belt. If I ever do get in a competition it will be raw so no belt.
