I have lost over 50 pounds since my fattest days. It was always "high carb" by the standards of this thread- 50% or more of calories from carbs. Hell, my _current_ diet is like that. The thing is, fruits and veggies and legumes are loaded with carbs. And, oh yeah, so is oatmeal. In all fairness, the diet changes were largely "reduce the carbs", if only because that was what I was eating the most. (For example, switching from two bowls of processed cereal at 7am and a pastry snack at 10:30am to a simple bowl of oatmeal at 7am). But even after reducing the breads and cereals and desserts, the majority of calories still came from carbs. The thing is, fruit is loaded with fructose and some important vegetables (carrots, potatoes, corn, and beans) have lots of carbs too.
Now, there was a fair bit of cardio, but never enormous (swimming three times a week, stuff like that). I will admit that it was a gradual process over months, with never losing more than one pound in one week. However, the toughest weeks were the first couple, when I had some tummy rumblings and cravings and all that.
FWIW, I have a body fat percentage of about 14%. Maybe it is impossible to get down to 5% or less with "high carbs". but I wouldn't know about that.
