I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Canned tuna...

I usually hate the taste of canned tuna, but I find that it's ok when made with corn, lettuce, olive oil, and lemon juice. Sadly, I can't eat corn on the AD.

Tuna + mayo + spinach is ok as well, but i have a hard time eating it more than once or twice a week.
Eggs + Tuna is not bad since it gets rid of the tuna taste.

Do you guys have any other canned tuna recipes that might be good?

yes i tried tuna + salsa for the first time yesterday. its amazing. def recommend it. Get a can of tuna and some Pace Picante salsa. Add enough salsa where you can kinda drown all the tuna. Mix. eat.

Tupperware box
Lettuce, tomato, cucumber, salad onions (chopped), beetroot, celery (chopped)
Fresh herbs - oregano or basil work well
Olive oil and balsamic vinegar
2 Tins tuna in springwater (drained)
Cheese (cubed) feta or chedder etc

Enjoy - I do almost daily

tuna, chopped fresh parsley (lots), chopped onion, some garlic, olive oil, lime juice, salt, pepper = heaven

This also works with cilantro or basil instead of parsley.

Where in the world are you? I'm not usually the type to advocate one brand over another, but with tuna it makes a huge difference. I tolerate good tuna, dislike average tuna and hate bad tuna. But I LOVE Sirena Chunky Tuna. It's canned as flesh/steaks, rather than catfood and it's always submerged in Italian Olive oil. Tuna has become a pleasure to eat for me now. And that's saying a lot from a fish-hater.

I have a Tuna Salad every day. Check my more recent posts in my log for recipe details including calorie break downs.

Canned White Albacore (none of that cheap cat food crap...), some mayo, some mustard, sweet or dill relish, a few hardboiled eggs, salt, pepper, and some Tabasco. Filling and tasty.

dylanamus, is eating tuna EVERY day healthy? I know and have read that tuna contains high mercury... I usually only eat about 4-5 cans a week max

Well I don't usually eat it on weekends, (it's a workplace convenience thing), which gives the body a bit of a break.

Although you will find that companies that can tuna use the variety that is lower in mercury. I can't remember if it's yellow or bluefin, but one of them is considered among the toxic varieties of fish that pregnant women should avoid the other isn't at all. It also depends on which sea they are caught in. The premium style tunas take all this into consideration and deliver the lowest possible mercury levels in their cans.

I read a study on tuna and mercury some time ago and the lesson I took away is that for a non-pregnant healthy individual, you would have to eat excessive quantities for a long period of time (months to years) without having any breaks to be considered at risk of mercury poisoning. And obviously you would have to be eating the variety of tuna that has toxic mercury levels, which you are unlikely to get in most cans.

I really like canned tuna, so I eat it. But not even that often.

If you dont like it, why force yourself to eat it?

If your after protein, try the many other types of canned fish. Eggs, peanut butter, cheese etc.

I did. I forced myself. Just like I forced myself to drink milk. My family was shocked to find out that I eat tuna regularly, let alone at all, same with the milk. I started my exposure to tuna in patties and pastas where the taste was hardly notable. I started the milk by making banana and Sustagen (a chocolate energy drink) milkshakes and slowly reducing the portions of the flavourings until one day I just had milk and liked it.

The moral of the story is if you can see the dietary and health benefits of a food and you want to like it, you CAN develop a taste for it. I don't see this as a negative, but a testimony to the benefits of mind over matter.

Tuna is one of the least fishy canned fish though...Your alternatives are certainly plausible though. You can explore a myriad of recipes including these ingredients.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm gonna try some of these recipes.

The reason for tuna is convenience + great source of protein. I tried other types of canned fish that are usually more expensive, and I find them much worse. I love fresh fish/seafood though.

Lately, I've been experimenting more with eggs + tuna in the morning. It gets rid of the tuna taste and after-taste, and if I add a couple of types of veggies, then it ends up tasting pretty good.

4 eggs, 1 can of tuna, olives, mushrooms, thyme, all fried in butter = good nutritious and filling breakfast w/ lots of fat and lots of protein.

PS: I don't know how some of you guys can add tomatoes ot your tuna salad... It makes the tomatoes very fishy, which I find tastes horrible. Any trick to it?

Dylan is right, use the best brand of tuna you can find.

My preference is the Fancy Feast brand.

It is smooth and not as chunky as other brands.

lol at fancy feast.

I shoot for the largest and cheapest amount of all white albacore tuna in water I can in the grocery store.

1 large tin of tuna, one cubed cucumber, a handful of jack cheese cubes, sea salt, fresh cracked pepper, bit of sour cream and salsa.

works well for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. And you will be filled to the gills.

I much prefer the taste of white albacore tuna, but I'm in college (meaning I'm broke :D ) so I tend to buy the cheaper "catfood" tuna, as most here have called it... Also, even though mercury levels probably aren't a huge concern for me, I buy the "catfood" tuna because it has a much lower mercury content than albacore.

Anyway, my favorite way to eat canned tuna is to mix in a small spoonful of mayo, then douse the rest in Frank's Red Hot Sauce (or whatever hot sauce you like). Enough hot sauce pretty much kills the taste of anything.. However, I like the taste of tuna, so that's not really a huge concern for me - I just like the taste of hot sauce as well :D I also throw in some salt and pepper, and sometimes red pepper flakes and fresh herbs (parsley, basil, etc.). A lot of people mentioned salsa (I'm assuming fresh) - that sounds really good.. I may try that sometime. PZilla - your suggestion sounds great as well!

Another one of mine which I really cant justify doing anymore was TunaGuac.

1 large tin of fancy feast, spoonful of mayo, squirt of lime juice, cilantro freshly chopped, one small red onion diced fine, and half an avocado cubed. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Man if I could only find the avocado's cheaper around here.

Any SLers in Cali want to ship me some!?
