I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Loves_Deadlifts, you can hook grip 5 x 400lb dead's? That's a pretty strong grip! Have you tried the #2? I would think you would get that no problems! I can close the #2 but can't quite get the #3. I've ordered the 2.5 so hopefully I'll be able to close the gap soon. I'm not sure on the limits of my hook grip. Over 140kg I use the alternate grip.

Actually i just use standard grip mostly. I don't think i've ever done 400 lbs x5 though. The best i ever managed was 400 lbs with a switch grip... for 1 rep.

That's still pretty impressive! Just got the Trainer, 1.5 and 2.5 to add to my 1, 2, and 3. I can close all but the 3 and 2.5. With the additional grippers I should be able to structure a decent program to close the 3.

Get both. You need the 3 if you are going to close it, but the 2.5 is great for training up to it. That's my plan anyway. I'm also thinking of getting the 3.5 and the 4 to do partials so I can get the 3. Oh, and congrats on the 2. That is an achievement in itself.

Do these things actually improve grip stength or merely test it?

May have to give them a go

If used properly they will improve your grip. You just have to apply the same training discipline to them as you do to other lifts. Anyway, I'll post updates as I close the higher ones in this forum. If anyone else wants to join in we can all post our progress here.

I train em once a week, thats all. But with the deads, chins an hangs (at the end of the workout) your hands do so much grabbing and holding, its easy to fry your forearms if you dont watch it. I go like this:
A bit of chalk on the hands, then -
Trainer- 5 x 5
Rest a minute and shake out your hands.
No 1- 5 x 5
Same again.
No 2- Singles alternating between hands. So far Ive managed eight clicks right, seven left.

Then I just rep out with the 1 followed by the trainer. Easy.

Another plus with these jiggers is they build some kick arse calluses on your fingers and palms.
Good for bitch slapping chatterbox teens away from the power rack..

They're pretty useful grip tools, and portable too. I use a Number 1, first for reps 3 sets of 5 then 1 set to fail (around 12-15 reps) then I finish with 5 sets of static holds. The key with the static holds is to close the gripper onto a coin and hold shut for time, the clock stops when you drop the coin. I can get reps with the No.2 but I think the static holds have more carry over for things like deadlifting (esp. for reps).
Male 37 - 5'9" - 240lb.
Deadlift 600+
Squat 500+
Pess 315 (on a good day)
Bench 450+
these numbers will go up
