    I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. :lol: But I did. anyone use chalk powder? i want to start using some and would like some of your experiences.
is it magnesium carbonate? i found it at bodybuilding.com and it was 'lifting chalk' and listed as mag carbonate, which happens to be what i take for my magnesium :P
how much should i expect to pay per lb? and how long does it last?
where can i find it other than online? would a 99c store carry such things>?

I don't use it, but I've used it before and I didn't really think it is that necessary to have. Of course, it is great to use at the competitive level to get that extra edge or if you have grip problems, but I just can't see myself adopting it for regular application, since I don't have grip problems yet.

It is around $20USD for 8 blocks, with each block containing 2oz (.125 pounds). That's 20 bucks for 1 pound of it. As for your question on locating it, I would think that a lot of stores revolving around weightlifting would sell it, as would a lot of gymnastic equipment suppliers.

I use my school's weight room and there are chalk stands by the deadlift/powerclean platforms. It helps mostly with keeping your hands dry.

woo!; I know, it sounds like a massive rip-off, but I can see a pound of chalk lasting a while. I would say that amount could last 8 months (a block a month), depending on how sparingly you use the chalk. As Lathiel said, I'm sure there is a cheaper alternative, but you may just have to sacrifice quality (might not have has much grip potential).

When I started in late November 2007 I bought 1 block of chalk (2 oz.).  It came the first part of December.  I'm sure I have at least half of the block left and I have been using it for almost 3 months now.  I use it on every set of every exercise too.  I don't put in on super thick like I have seen some people do, but I don't use it sparingly either.  I use all I need each time not trying to spare it.  Apparently these blocks last a pretty long time.  I put my chalk block in a plastic bowl with a lid I got from our kitchen.  I put it on with my hands over the bowl each time.  If any pieces break off (and sometimes they do; it's pretty brittle) they fall in the bowl and I can still use them.

thanks for the replies. im sure chalk balls and blocks are similar, but how about in comparison to chalk powder? i just typed into amazon 'lifting chalk' and it returned a bunch of balls and blocks, which doesnt seem too easily applied to your hands. just curious, since most vids with big lifts have a scene of them applying powder and getting everywhere :P

i only really use chalk when deadlifting and its great.
it stops my hands from sweatting so when doing a set i only have to think about how the hell i'm going to lift the weight as opposed to worrying about the bar slipping from my hands!!
Though i have noticed that i get more callus's when i use chalk...
its alot better than using straps anyway.
