I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

i must admit that i have fallen in love with both chin ups and pullups :D

but i was wondering which one works the most amount of muscle ? and also i am curious to know the extent at which they strengthen the posterior deltoid...

thanks in advance :D

I dont think any of them work the posterior delts too well,

youd have to do one of them "lean back" type pull ups/chins or inverted rows which are also called pull ups by some.

I'd say they work around the same total, but chin ups put more emphasis on your biceps, pull ups more on your lats. There's no reason you can't do both, or focus on the one that targets whatever your weaker area is.

I prefer pull ups. I never do chin ups.
Stats:
Bench: 97kg
Squat: 112kg
Deadlift: 117kg
OHP: 55kg
Dips: 40kg
Pull-ups: 22kg

The deadlift is not dead; size is dead without it.

i love both :) how do you think i could work different variations (wide, narrow, around-the-world, close grip etc.) into my current program that only consists of: squats, deads, OHP, crunches and chins/pull ups ?

any help would be great thanks :)

Each day do squats, push and pull. And maybe something for the core. Program according to SL5x5 rules. Switch between different push/pull exercises.

Don`t think it matters much how you variate between the different hangups (as is it called in Norwegian) variants. You can do different variants on different days or variate between sets.

Chin ups are fantastic for building muscle mass on your biceps.

Pull ups work on your forearms more than chin ups as well.

I rotate between chinups, pullups and wide grip pullups instead of just alternating between chins and pulls. Usually wide-grip is just me crying like a baby at arms length wishing I could do 1.

You can take the emphisis off of your biceps and onto your back with chinups if you focus on "push the elbows down" isntead of "pull the body up". The level will just bend on its own as your shoulder rotates downwards. That's how I generally think of them.

I think there`s two ways of doing chins. You can curl up your legs near the top. I used to do this and wondered why it made the lift easier.

Or you can keep your legs behind you and push the chest towars the bar.

I believe the difference between these two lies in the biceps. You can compensate for having a weak biceps by pulling feet forward and up, thereby changing the body position relative to gravity, and through that reducing the load on the biceps.

I`ve done pulldowns lately and the biggest difference between pulldowns and chins as I see it, lies in the use of biceps. Pulling feet forward makes the lift more like a pulldown.

Hm that's pretty interesting. I always seem to push my feet forward on the last couple of chins in my workout and wondered if I was making it easier by doing this or if it was just a mental thing. Guess it's anwered now :p
