I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Charlie, If you want to learn something that allows you to take people down, learn how to use weapons. Arts like Eskrima / Kali and Indonesian Silat are battle tested martial arts which show you how to take down guys a few stone heavier than you. Only an idiot goes to a fight believing he defend himself with just the weapons God gave him at the end of his wrists.
Otherwise, all the 'open handed' arts are great for exercise, fun and overall conditioning, providing the instructor is good!!

Krav maga amazing fighting style go learn it. It is meant for crowded city streets and fighting to the death with anything around you. that is why it is used by isreali special forces.

No no no, YA, krav isn't about fighting to the death, it's about fighting to get away. No use hanging out killing the guy if you can be on your way to safety instead. ;-)

It is used to kill and disable your opponent not to run away. The point of krav maga is to protect yourself in the most deadly situation hence it was developed by the military.

Disabling them, yes. But my instructors emphasize pretty frequently that if the choice is between pummeling a downed oponent and getting out, you get out.

OK ladies  -follow this link. The clip's rather stylised but it gives you a feel as to what Silat / Kali are all about.

Why learn a 'military' martial art? Soldiers use guns when it comes to real fighting...

Ninjutsu's been good to me. Just find a real Bujinkan Dojo, there's a lot of nonsence out there. I used it in the real world plenty of times when I worked as a doorman. But as a basic rule I would say the practitioner is more important than the art. People get too worked up over which is the best combat system. The most dangerous fighter I ever met hadn't studied any formal martial art.
Male 37 - 5'9" - 240lb.
Deadlift 600+
Squat 500+
Pess 315
Bench 450+
these numbers will go up (except the bench....bloody shoulder joint)

Hi Charlie,
I practice judo and help teach it, this martial art gives you an extremely good workout and is handy if you need to protect yourself, not that any other martial art wouldn't also give you that.  I think it's the same with all arts you get out of them what you are willing to put in.
Hope this helps.

@yoko I wanted to try judo and I had a hard time finding a place (TONS of jiujitsu around, especially Brazilian, not so much judo). Now my schedule is pretty full, but in the future do you have any tips for locating a dojo?

I have recently started Kempo Juijitsu :)

Before choosing this, I looked in to a range or martial arts and the reason I chose Kempo Juijitsu is because a lot of other martial arts do not focus on ground work. I watched loads of Gracie video's taking masters from all different martial arts and completely owning them on the ground.
As it has Kempo in it aswell, we also focus on some striking and footwork :)
