I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Good spirit Coop! It's not a biggie to get stuck sometimes, and as you say about the Deads and BBR, it's always better to have a proper technique. Once that is achieved increased weight will come, so stick to the gym and hard workouts!

06/23/08 - Monday

Squats: 5/5/5/5/5 @ 225lbs.

:: Squats felt so good that I actually did 230 on the 5th set. Look out for 240lbs(1.5x my bodyweight) soon.

Overhead Press: 5/5/5/5/5 @ 80lbs.

:: I felt really strong going in today and I did 80 just fine. Movin' on up to 85 Friday.

Deadlifts: 5 @ 135lbs.

:: Got completely messed up today on deadlifts, because I work out at planet fitness they came and told me mid-set that I couldn't deadlift. what a bunch of shit. I don't know what I'm gonna do about that.

Chinups: 7/4/5 @ b/w

:: Like I said, I felt really strong. For me, this was definite improvement(I can remember less than 9mths ago I could only do 2 max) I'm lookin forward to next workout.

No Deadlifting? WTF? They gonna hold the customer's hand when they pee, too?

Thanks, and yeah I'm not pleased with them at all. I'm going to start combing other gyms soon and I'll possibly switch. Squats are definitely getting challenging, but I'm really happy with what I've got thus far.

Thanks. I don't know about everybody else but I played catcher through most of my childhood so I've always been kinda strong lower body. I guess it makes up for a weaker upper body, which is where I really need to work. Keep ya head up, bro. Stay consistent, progress will come.

True, true. I'm starting to think that all my years of MTB and rollerskating (ramp, street and long-distance touring) have helped me with my squats even though it has been a long time since I did any of that seriously. My upper body is definitely trying to catch up to where my squats say I am.

@ Kiib and Coop:

Those are good point to consider. I played American football, just two seasons, other than that I was into swimming but nothing serious. Oh, and from 18 to 26 I was a proffessional club goer, but something tells me all that dancing and partying developed something, just not sure what,

Squats: 5/5/5/5/5 @ 230lbs.

Bench Press: 5/5/5/5/5 @ 160lbs.

Dips: 15/10/10

:: It was my buddy's birthday and I was running an hour behind so I decided to cut out barbell rows this one time(which I hate doing) and I got a quick hour workout in. Bench felt great but I think I should start to widen my grip just a bit, or maybe do some inclines to balance out my chest. Squats felt heavy, and they are becoming pretty challenging to say the least. Dips were a great burnout and I was pretty satisfied.

BBR can be a drag, specially because I keep wondering if the posture is correct. What you can do is lower the weight until you happy with the technique, it helps a lot. Or imagine you are pulling your favorite actress from a lake while she says "Coop, you are my hero!'",

Squats: 5/5/5/5/5 @ 235lbs.

:: Struggled on these, I might stay on 240 an extra day to keep my form good.

Overhead Press: 5/5/5/4/5 @ 85lbs.

:: Need to stay determined on these, considering my left shoulder injury and overall weakness in upper body. I'm gonna do 85 again wednesday before I move forward because of a failure on the 4th set.

Deadlifts: 5 @ 135lbs

:: Still don't know what to do about not being able to deadlift at planet fitnes. they said as long as the weight doesn't touch the floor throughout the set then I'm fine... So there I am doing some harder variation of the deadlift with lighter weight. It sucks.

Pullups: 3/4/3 @ b/w

:: Know my back is getting stronger but I still need to improve on my bodyweight lifting.

What is the deadlift variation you're using?

You could try the Romanian deadlift... as far as the lifting goes I think you can lift more because of the stretch reflex at the bottom. and as you are not dropping the weight on the floor then maybe you can get away with it?
But eventually it's going to be hard on the hands cos you can't reset the grip between reps.

At 135 lbs, you should be able to progress on these a while, giving you some time to check out alternate gyms.

@ sifaan

romanian deadlift sounds like a good alternative

but personally i would ask them if its doing you any harm if there say no then continue the way we all do
itll be like a motive to prove them wrong.
hmm maybe a little on the cocky side sorry. its just that i belive that if its bad form, then for sure dont do it but if you comfortable the way you do it
just do it when there not looking lol

Squats: 5/5/5/5/5 @ 240lbs.

:: Holy hell. I'm really glad I'm sticking with 240lbs Wednesday, because this was difficult. Also, I was a little disappointed because after I finished the sets, I remembered in the 5x5 ebook it said that when you can squat 1.5x your bodyweight, you'll have big arms. I have small arms. They are the weakest point of my physique.

Bench Press: 5/5/5/4/4 @ 165lbs.

:: I've been getting the weirdest feeling lately. The weight doesn't feel as heavy as it used to, and I'm surprised when I fail on a set. I'm really glad I'm in the right mindset now. I can't wait till next bench day.

BB Rows: 5/5/5/5/5 @ 100lbs.

:: I feel the same way about rows as I do about deadlifts..not interested. I'd like to begin being motivated about my back exercises...but it's just not that awesome.
