I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Tuesday, Nov 10 workout

Postby coryK » Tue Nov 10, 2009 3:56 pm

Still feeling a bit dizzy and weak from the cold, so just went for a recovery workout today:

Squat: 60kg 5x5
Bench: 40kg 5x5
IR: 12,12,8 PR
Bridges w/side swaps 4x1.25kg@60sX3

Played around with my breathing a bit on the squats. I noticed at 80kg that when I breathed out on the way up the weight tended to push my scapulae down and I would have less bar support because of it. So I tried holding my breath for all 5 reps...was a lot harder than I imagined, but was a great way to help keep my chest out and upper back pinched tight. Anyone else holding their breath for all 5 reps? I honestly don't think I'd be able to do this at 80kg.

IR numbers are high enough now, going to switch to legs on a bench for the next round. Gotta look up the proper way to do them first.

Challenge for Thursday: eat well, get lots of rest and beat the sh*t out of my OHP PR before I get left in the dust!

I can't imagine holding my breath for 5 reps! I do take a breath at the top and attempt to hold it till I am back up however on the way up, I find that I let out some air in some grunting, yelling, general animal noise way. But, that does seem to help get me back to the top! :) Impressive numbers on IR's!

Thats fine holding your breath at that weight, I should think you can blast them out pretty quick, but when it gets heavier, you will struggle, also its slightly dangerous, you dont want to pass out with that amount of weight on your back. I do try and blast out 2-3 reps holding my breath, but after that I pause at the top and take a big deep breath and hold it until I am upright again, like Rob I also make a lot of grunting noise, I do some times wonder what my neighbours are thinking. :)

Thx guys. I can be quite the prolific grunter as well...ever since I started squatting over BW the noises got weirder and louder. I'm learning to keep it unvoiced at the very least cuz the mild-mannered Japanese lifters in my gym aren't used to anyone sounding like a bull in heat ;)

Never thought about the dangers of passing out...thanks for the info Jimmie. I think I'll try to push 2 or 3 sets at a time with a single breath and then recharge like you do. Sounds like a good way to keep my chest out with minimal effort spent on resetting each time I take a new breath. Will be interesting to see if I can keep the grunting to a minimum when I get back to proper work sets after I shake this damn cold.

Got to thinking last night, I'm only 6 increases away from a 1.5 BW squat :) That would be a sweet xmas gift to myself. Hopefully I don't gain too much weight in the mean time!

Would be an interesting way to go though...."How did he die?", "He passed out with 2000lbs on his back! He forgot to breathe!" :D

6 increases away...NICE!!! Well, even if I surpass you on OHP, I have a long way to catch up on Squats. I have to make it to 300lbs for 1.5x
