I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

I love dips, in fact I love any weighted body weight exercise. Currently doing dips with a 25kg plate for 5 sets of 5 reps. Love it :)

I need to stop thinking about it and just do it! I can push out 20 pushups in my workout A after benchpress on first set. Roughly how many dips should I expect to be able to do? I'm just going to try it, and if I manage over 3 dips first set I'm making the switch.

Well, I punched out 8 dips the first time I ever tried them and very little training in advance (1x5 bench at 40kg or so), that was with a bodyweight of 74kg or so, though. The next week I reached 10, so I progressed quickly on them. :)

At the same time I could do about 25 pushups tops I think.

I'd love to do a weighted dip one day. For now my own bodyweight is more than sufficiently challenging.

Where do you guys do your dips? Any suggestions for doing them at home?

Normally I can just do them at my college gym, but over the summer or traveling I never know what to do.... any ideas?

One more question on weighted dips: I know that when you´re able to perform 15 you should switch to weighted dips. Does this apply for women as well? Or should this number be somewhat lower? I am asking because I am at 9 dips, my best score on the first set at this moment.

You can do them between two chairs backs or high stools. Alternatively do reverse dips using the seat of one chair.

You can start adding weight sooner, but you'll find you'll stall sooner. Mehdi suggests 15 so that you have the required strength to make decent progress when you start adding the weight. You don't want to be stalling at 5kg. It also depends on what your other two sets are like. If you're doing 9/8/7 then it might be ok, but if your sets look more like 9/5/3 then I would definitely suggest you keep with the bodyweight dips for the moment.

Thank you Dave T for your advice. It seems I´ll stick with BW dips for a while, since my sets are more like 9/5/5.
