I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

my 2 cents on dips

i was doing dips one day and could not get past about 8 or 9 reps with just bodyweight. I went ot Texas for a week for work and did not lift all week, cam back the following week and did sets of 10 with a 45, 55 and 65 lb db straped to me. i could not believe it. i dont know what happened, if it was a mental thing or what but my tris blew up after that. i love dips. i started the 5x5 program this morning and did 3 sets of 15 on pushups so i think i am going to either alternate dips and pushups or switch to dips. any thoughts on wether to switch or not would be appreciated. i wish i would have started out doing dips along time ago.

I work out at home and after reading a Keith Wassung article on using thick bars for dips I managed to scavange some nice 2" bars. It feels a whole lot better on the wrists and just more stable. He said he could do more reps with the thicker bar, Im not sure about that yet since I only have used them once. Feels good so far though. Worth trying out if you like dips.

^ Do 3x5. But you always throw in a few more reps if you got the energy.
Stats:
Bench: 97kg
Squat: 112kg
Deadlift: 117kg
OHP: 55kg
Dips: 40kg
Pull-ups: 22kg

The deadlift is not dead; size is dead without it.

Since I started 2+ months ago, I've tried to be faithful to the new SL5x5 program that ignored dips . But, I really wanted to dips so last week I added them as a regular movement (3x5) on my b days. I do enjoy dips but I do experience pain, bilaterally in my shoulders, especially in the first rep of each set. This pain fades in the second and subsequent sets and is non existent during recovery. Also, it seems to have lessened with each b day. Disappointedly I'm wondering if i should forget the dip or keep going through this pain?
No, I don't want to be stronger than you; that would be too easy. Now, to be stronger than I was yesterday? Yes, that's more challenging.

In a very general way, I think it's okay to add dips to SL. As to your specific situation, I'm not qualified to say.

I'd up the volume of them. 3*5 isn't going to be enough. The program that I'm on has them as an option for accessory work and the goal is to get to 50 total reps (regardless of sets) for weighted and 100 for BW. I would simply pick a total number of reps you want to do and simply do that many. If it's 15 then that's cool but I'd do much more than that if I were you.

So you'd recommend that to people on a strength training program (SL or SS)? I love the idea of doing high volume on exercises like dips and pull-ups, I'm just not sure how it fits into such a program.

I've done over 100 BW dips in a day before, basically a bunch of 10x10s, but I can't really imagine doing that many as part of a workout, especially after doing other big lifts.
