I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Do muscles turn to fat when you get old?

Bigger chest, bigger arms, 6-pack abs, bigger calves, x-shape.

Check out Clarence Bass. He's over 70 and in better shape than most of us. http://www.cbass.com/

Wow, that's some inspiring stuff. Not necessarily to this degree, but this is how human beings are supposed to age. So much of it's about mindset too. When my grandparents (father's side) decided, at about the same age as Mr. Bass, that they were too old to get off the couch, get around without motorized help, etc. etc., they both aged exponentially almost overnight -- they got heavier, their bodies started breaking down, and their minds started going.

Anyways, I guess the take home message is that exercise and a healthy lifestyle should be lifelong pursuits, not just means towards bigger arms and a six-pack for next summer....

Amen.

I mean, even taking exercise out of the equation, it's important to just be active.

I don't think my grandpa exercised much, but he's 81, and he can still swing an axe, shovel snow, and the like. He's retired, but he's active doing his hobbies.

To me, too much idle time is depression. Too much work burns me out, but people glorify the opposite ("What can I do to earn enough money to not have to do anything again?") are crazy.

But yeah, it'll be interesting to see our generation get older. We have no excuses about not exercising.

"And now, behold, The Lord has kept me alive, as He said, these forty-five years since the time that The Lord spoke this word to Moses, while Israel walked in the wilderness; and now, lo, I am this day eighty-five years old. I am still as strong to this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me; my strength now is as my strength was then, for war, and for going and coming. So now give me this hill country of which The Lord spoke on that day; for you heard on that day how the Anakim were there, with great fortified cities: it may be that The Lord will be with me, and I shall drive them out as The Lord said." [emphasis mine]

IMO - being feeble b/c you are old is a relatively new concept. I want to be able to say I have the blood of a warrior grandfather when I reach my 80's and 90's.

Muscles my become flaccid due to atrophy through non-use(thus giving the appearance of beign fatty).
No, I don't want to be stronger than you; that would be too easy. Now, to be stronger than I was yesterday? Yes, that's more challenging.

Yes they do
Too much alcohol can actual make you fat. Alcohol contains calories that no longer get burned like normal fat because of dehydration. So what starts to happen is you begin to gain weight, but gain no real muscle definition, therefore leading you to look fat? This is also the reason why people may say to you ‘Don’t build muscle and get to big, if you stop working out one day you might become fat!’

I think he actually believes that, but since it was not supported by any evidence, I would regard it as a joke.

My theological scholarship is a little rusty, but I'm pretty sure the old testement also featured people in excess of 400 years old.

Google Clarence Bass and Jack Lalane too, they're old as running water but still train.
Male 37 - 5'9" - 240lb.
Deadlift 600+
Squat 500+
Pess 315
Bench 450+
these numbers will go up (except the bench....bloody shoulder joint)

Yeah! Whats happened to ol' Hank? I saw him on some UK gameshow wearing chinos and looking skinny, I was a bit disturbed.

A couple of years ago he said he stopped lifting heavy and switched to higher reps. Said something about his joints hurting.
