Do you get "the stupids"?

Postby discordian on Sun Oct 19, 2008 8:34 am

Hi,

I've been curious. When my exercises got arduous (for me, not in general) I've noticed a new mental state that I've personally dubbed "the stupids". For a hour or even more after the training I'm quite content just staring a blank wall. Certainly I would prefer a blank wall to my work or anything that requires the use of sack of noodles in my head. I also seem to have no sense of self preservation at that point. (At least when interacting with the fairer sex.)

Do other people get this? What is the generally used term for this?

Disc.

..I mean, it's like a superpower. How do I activate it intentionally?

I find I'm calm, and sometimes I zone out during the workout, but afterwards I'm still reasonably on-the-ball.

When do you work out? Could be the time of day. I do it first thing in the morning.

I understand EXACTLY what you are talking about.

The same goes for me when I'm in the middle of my training session too.

People come up to me and ask me questions or just to shoot the shit (rare) and I usually end up not making sense or saying something retarded and have to remind them that my mind isn't thinking about putting together cognitive sentences as much as lifting.

It's usually fine unless someone comes up to me and does one of the two

1.) Asks for advice. Then I have to take a long pause and manufacture my response to it is as intellegent as I really am.
2.) Give me advice. Then I have to again; take a long pause, and consider if it is intelegent or not. When it is; I usually just say "thanks, i appreciate it". When the advice is incorrect or stupid, that's the kicker...because I usually say "thanks" and walk away.

"Thanks" for stupid advice. Maybe I'm too nice but the second I walk away and have a few more seconds to think about it; I get pissed that I ONLY said "thanks" and didn't correct the moron giving me crappy advise.

Example: An older man took it upon himself to spot me during band-resist bench a few weeks ago and then proceeded to tell me I needed to 'focus on my lockout'. I said "thanks" and then rethought my previous set. I have a very good bench form; and this was light weight, so my lockout was LOCKED OUT. He later came up to me (10min later) after I finished a set of DB rows and continued to ramble about the importance of locking out; that is when I was able to be a dick and give him my mind. I told him simply and nicely: "I appreciate you advice, but I think I have pretty good for and have made great progress so far." This was said in a tone that would reflect my "STFU" feelings towards a smaller old man helping me out with usless information.

So yeah, I understand what your getting at Discordian.

LoL, I get the "Stupids" you speak of. I know I get it when I respond to a fellow gym goer and I can almost see outside of myself, watching the convo, and shaking my head in disbelief saying "Uhh....WHAT?!?" to myself. As stated by others on this thread, it usually happens when I am in the middle of my work sets (most usually towards the end of it).

I think it is quite hilarious and my GF takes this time to poke fun at me, knowing I will have a hard time formulating a witty response...LoL. :P I usually get "un-Stupided" LoL by the time I get home from the gym, or sometimes when it's worse, after my shower - I've come up with some stupid lyrics and melodies in the shower while under the influence of this hilarious condition.

Yeah, I definitely know what you mean, deadlifts do it the worst for me.

The bodyweight deadlift challenge (how many bodyweight deadlifts can you do in 5 minutes) causes me to become absolutely mentally useless. I've had to walk to my friends house and hang out there for almost an hour before I felt okay to drive, going on the road in that condition would have been worse than driving drunk.

I think I probably do get like that. If someone asks a question, I completely forget any manners and usually just reply with 'WHAT!?!' in the gym.
