I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Does anyone here have trouble getting suits to fit them?

Postby Edziu on Wed Jun 11, 2008 2:21 pm

Serious question. I've just dug an old suit out and it still fits but it's significantly tighter across the shoulders.

What happens when you put the serious muscle on? If I wear a suit that feels comfortable across the shoulders, it already hangs on me like a tent. I asked a lady working in a suit shop about this and she told me that most suits are tailored for older men and they tend to be more generous in the waist department.

Do I have to go tailored from now on?

Had this the other day too.
Didn't dare to fold my arms in it for fear of splitting the stitching down the back

I have the same problem. Custom tailored is how you'll have to go. I have to buy pants with the waist size too big because otherwise my thighs don't fit. Haha, try this: bend your arm and try to touch your shoulder. I can't do that anymore, my forearms get in the way of my biceps. I also can't reach around to wash my back the way I used to.

know that too. bought lots of shirts last year, and they all don't fit anymore because of the back/chest - can't close the buttons without making it look strange...

I've always wanted to get me a nice tailored suit, but what if it also doesn't fit anymore after half a year? then it's just wasted money, lots of :/

If you wear a suit for work you should be getting them tailored anyway. Having the waist taken in and the excess fabric removed from the jacket is not a big deal and makes all the difference in the world between a suit that looks good on you and a suit that looks cheap.

If you're young and growing a lot you might have to get this done a handful of times but once you get a bit older you should stabilize in your measurements a tad.

If you have the tailor leave you a bit of room in the jacket that will account for some of the growing you'll do.

Haha, I can totally relate to that. I can't even close the buttons of my jacket anymore  My suit is way too small for me now. Luckily I don't have to wear them, I bought a cheap one for student parties and official things. If I buy a suit again I think it's going to be a cheap one again. I don't like the idea of spending so much money for an ideal fit. I mean, expensive suits don't look that much better, you have to wear the same one for a very long time to get your money out of it and the materials used aren't that more comfortable. Maybe if you have to wear that thing 10 hours a day it would get annoying if it doesn''t fit 100%.

This is a worry I have as well. I haven't ever bought good clothes and I keep putting it off because I know I'll be growing over the next couple of years. I guess the best thing would just be to bite the bullet and get some new stuff every year or two if it's really needed.

P.S. the Google ads on the side are freakin' creepy! On most of the threads here it's weight-loss / build-muscle ads, but as soon as I click on the "suit" thread an ad comes up for suits.

Tayloring pre-made suits used to be fine for me, but now my proportions are simply impossible to adapt any off-the-shelf suit jackets to.

I might have to shoot over to Thailand and get a few fully custom made suits!

I know most of you aren't from Australia, but generally speaking, is it easy to find people who make fashionable business wear completely from scratch to suit individuals?

There are many (cheap) tailors around here in China, however most of them only make classic-style suits out of a 1972 catalogue.

I recommend you first read 'Dressing the Man' by Alan Fussler to get a good ideas of proportion, colors that will fit you (book is filled with tips to differentiate ordinary suits with for-you-only suits). Then talk with your tailor to make sure he really understands what you need.

Generally speaking i found that 'good' professional tailors know their stuff and can tell you why such & such patterns or fittings are good/bad for you.. while others may simply tell you "looks good" to make you buy the fabrics they already have on hand.

After reading the book, you'll be able to spot good / bad tailors just by asking them a few questions :)
