I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

OK. I think my problem with the Bench Press is that I am in a Gyminee challenge to do 5000 push-ups.

Good squats Doo.

5000 press ups - that's what I love - there's always something interesting going on in your logs.

High Frequency Training

Postby Doo » Tue May 19, 2009 4:24 pm

OK. In addition to the 5000 push-ups, I am doing HFT (sort of like Grease the Groove) with chin-ups. I do 1 set per day with up to 3 sets once per week as assistance exercises to normal lift day. Yes, I am being careful to not overtrain.

Grip, Wrist & Forearm Exercises

Postby Doo » Tue May 19, 2009 4:27 pm

Still doing my grip, wrist and forearm exercises on Wednesdays. I tend to do weighted levers and barbell wrist curls with occasional gripper work. I do not plan on logging all that here but I do log it in my Gyminee log.

Looking forward already to tales of 'backyard strongman' , 'grip strength' and 'rope climbing'

Thanks Mouse. It was your prodding that got me (re-)started. I've given up on tire flipping in the back yard because I'm not sure that I want to look out back and see the tire sitting there when I'm not using it. I am thinking of getting a sled though. Probably going to put my climbing rope up this weekend. I rigged it so that I could take it down for the winter and put it back up without a lot of trouble.

Doo, your logs are so interesting to read. Thanks for getting back to posting them! What is the pushup challenge, exactly? Do you have to do 5,000 pushups in a day or in a week or longer? I hope it's not 1 set of 5,000! :D

First to 5000 push-ups. I'm ramping up and am just getting to 100 a day. There are guys doing 3 times that. So far I have only done 30 in one set. I want to get that to a higher number like 50 by the time I finish this. I need to get to 200 total per day because I don't really want to do this for much more than 4 weeks.

I really want to end up doing weighted push-ups and weighted chin-ups. I'm not a big fan of very high rep exercises. I have read that there are guys who have done high reps for extended times and there was little strength increase or hypertrophy after initial stages. I won't argue that there is the endurance effect but that is not the type of endurance that I'd like to have.

Texas Method - Week 5/Day 2

Postby Doo » Thu May 21, 2009 4:55 pm

  • Squat (Deep) - 2x3x270lb
  • Deadlift - 3x335lb
  • Seated Press - 3x3x130lb
  • Chin-Ups - 5x(BW+20) PR/5XBW/5xBW
  • Barbell Curls - 3x8x80lb
  • Standing Cable Curls - 2x5x25lb

Must have not recovered from Monday's squats. Got enough sleep. Not sure what the problem was but I couldn't get the 2x5 Squat nor the 1x5 Deadlift. Could have had a new Seated Press PR if I would have noticed that I lifted the same weight as last weeks PR. Damn! I could have at least added 1/4lb fractional plates to beat last week. I have added bicep workout to my Wednesday workout. Yes... it's more for hypertrophy than strength.

Waiting Until Tomorrow...

Postby Doo » Sat May 23, 2009 1:05 am

Today was my Speed Set day as part of Texas Method. I wanted to start out with a Deadlift 1RM PR attempt after seeing Mouse's video. Decided to wait until mid-morning tomorrow which should be ok since that still gives me about 44 hours until my high volume / high intensity Monday. Depending upon weather, I may warm-up in the morning with a short bike ride. Need to do some additional wamr-up because it is harder for me to do workouts early in the day.

Deadlift PR

Postby Doo » Sat May 23, 2009 4:06 pm

Deadlift - 1x365lb PR

Doing my workout at 10:00AM when I normally workout in the evenings. I did foam rolling and mobility exercises but I seem to always lift heavier in the evening. I also have some torn calluses. I think that if I take care of my hands and make another PR attempt next Friday evening, I should be able to hit 380lb.

Now with that out of the way, I will do some speed sets and then I gotta go outside and get some chores done...

Worked on pool day before yesterday and prepared vergatable garden for tilling yesterday. Pulled a lot of weeds. I'm very sore plus I got a sunburn on my shoulders. Not enough sunscreen. I probably have another 4 hours work to prepare garden for planting.

I will skip today's main workout. I'll probably do some push-ups and chin-ups but that is about it. I'll start back with Wednesday's workout. This Friday I'll do 5RM attempts instead of speed sets. Next week, I'll try to continue with planned weights.
