I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Some additional points:

Not just a wider ROM on a few exercises but a much wider variety of possible ROMs. Lots of interesting movement possibilities.

But

DB are not less effective for a basic strength program than BB just because you can load the BB more. The more fundamental problem is difficulty with progressive loading in the strength range of 4-6 reps (5# jumps are too much) and, at higher weights, difficulty with getting the weights into position, grip strength, etc.

So...

As a general rule, the better use for DBs is assistance work in the 8-15 rep range.

I would think that this is a good summarisation.

I have a freespotter for my barbell and love it, the guy also sells a version for dumbells and at first I thought it was'nt something I'd ever need. After attempting incline dumbell presses I see why it would help. Heavy dumbells are hard as hell to get into position. Something like the dumbell freespotter would be nice if you were serious about them. Dumbells are definately great at showing weak areas and imbalances as well as pounding your core and stabilizers, definately a nice change once in a while.

My latest favorite exercise is the one armed dumbell snatch. It hits just about everything.
Gotta do both IMHO.

what do you guys think of the one arm DB clean and press?
I did a few sets of those the other day just for fun (just a 75 lb DB) and they really killed my shoulders the next day....

Check it out. I did a 2 month dumbell routine with them as the main lift. They really work you.

+1 DB snatch is a much better movement, IMHO.

I've read some comparisons regarding certain exercises and how they function with barbells and dumbbells, and it seems to pretty much boil down to what exercises you do.

It's really hard to come with a conclusion of what's better, so I'm not even sure what to think anymore! I guess you could say barbells are for strength, while dumbbells are for hyperthropy and improving weaknesses at barbell lifts.

I agree, I think both have their place. and one can help you get over a plateau on the other (in my experience)
