I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Eating 3500cal a day.. would 4500 be overkill?

GOMAD, lose your skinny look forever.

Eating 3500cal a day.. would 4500 be overkill?

Postby kingdamo on Thu Oct 29, 2009 9:13 pm

I'm currently 5'11" and 74kg , aiming for ~80kg. I've read that when bulking, you should aim to consume +500cals of you're normal calorie intake - beyond that you're not really helping muscle growth and will be storing alot of energy as fat. i'm aiming for 3500 cals a day at the moment (cos maintenance works out at around 3000). If I were to aim for 4500cal+ a day (or as close to that as possible), would that just be overkill? like would it actually speed up muscle growth or would the extra calories just be stored? Oh yeah and im doing GOMAD at the moment, currently ~1/2 gallon a day. cheers guys

Your calories are not really that high considering you are doing half gomad.

I am 5'8", I get a similar amount of calories from just food and struggle to maintain weight. I would say that you should be hitting 4500kcak from just food and using the milk to get that closer to 6000kcal. It really isnt a great deal, remember that Michael phelps chugs down 12000kcal a day.

Yea, when he exercises...if he goes about with his normal business, job or whatever I doubt he consumes 12000kcal a day.

Yes, but the OP and most of us viewing this strength training website are doing intense regular strength training. I want to add weight, the OP actually mentions 'bulking' I take this to mean massive weight gain over a temporary period with the aid of an highly calorific diet.

A swimmer like phelps would not even be aiming to to gain any mass, he ate 12000kcal as pure maintenance.

I think most people who visit this site lifts only 3x60min per week...at least that's what I do, but I don't know about the rest.

Anyways 12000 kcal is obviously because he's an olympic swimmer. He probably works out 5-6 hours a day, if not more. If one day he doesn't workout, he wouldn't consume 12000 kcal. Not a chance.

Anyways, to the OP:
I also have maint. of 3000kcals a day. And I also do 1/2 GOMAD lol, so I get about 4500kcals. It has worked for me so far.
