I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Equivalent weight of inverted rows

Postby jww38 on Tue Nov 03, 2009 6:35 am

Does anyone know the rough percentage of bodyweight pulled on an inverted row?

I am currently struggling with 75 kg barbell rows at 84 kg bodyweight. I warm up with a set of 10 inverted rows with the bar slightly out of my reach when lying on the ground and feet on the ground. Could I get close to this equivalent weight by changing foot/bar position (I do them in the Smith machine).

Sorry if this has been discussed before but my searching couldn't find it.

Depends on how & where you are placing your feet. Feet on the floor with legs straight would probably be close to 60% of your BW.

Thats what I was thinking. How does the vertical distance between the bar and your feet change the equivalent weight if any or does that just change the "focus" placed on your back muscles (upper, middle, etc)?

I can do barbell rows with my bodyweight but tried inverted rows recently and could not get chest to touch bar properly on a single rep!

I did the version with legs on a bench though.

That's strange and makes me think either something is wrong with your BBR form or your inverted row form.. I weigh 80 kg, row 72,5x5 with acceptable form but can do inverted rows with feet on same level as bar for about 8-10 reps.. I think rowing BW should mean you'd be able to do 'planche' inverted rows, provided your core is strong enough. That'd be cool.. Normal inverted rows seem alot easier than BBRows, but you pretty much have to keep good form, you can't cheat as easily as you can with the BBR.

I don't get my chest to the bar too much either. My form is good so I think it's just a flexibility issue. I usually get the first half of my set to touch then the second half I am probably about 4inches away. But like I said my form is strict. I just do them until I only get about half the distance to the bar. At that point I'm probably not getting too much out of the limited motion.
