I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Failing on the dips

Typically I always used a backpack for weights when I was dipping. Luckily the UPS man came today with my new dip belt right before I had to do my dips.

Before, I used to set up my bench right underneath the handles of where I would dip so just incase I failed I would just place my knees on to the bench.

But now that I have the weight hanging below me, I have no solution for when I fail...

I had been doing great on dips and have gotten up to 80 lbs 3x5 without any problems. Today I was doing 82.5lbs with the new dip belt and was pretty terrified when first using it. I definitely didn't give it my all and ended with reps of 4,4,3 because I was too scared of failing.

What is every one elses solution to this? Unfortunately the dip handles are higher and I'm not able to safely put my feet on the ground if I do fail. Meaning I'm either falling backwards and breaking my shoulders.

What's everyone elses solution to this problem?

Try shorting up the slack in chain, keeping the weights above the knees.

Also learn to bail from dips without bench under you. Start with no weights, then gradually add more. Training yourself to fall safely will come in handy when moving up in weight and help overcome your fear.

Consider ring dips. Easy to bail out of, they fly out of your way. More challenging of a dip that recruits more stabilizing muscles.

Good luck. Got to love those dips!
