I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Fainting

When I do deadlifts and squats without pushing my abs out by using the valsalva maneuver, I get pain in my lower back.

So I started using the valsalva maneuver and it helped quite a bit. BUT, the problem is that now I can't do 1 rep of deadlift or 1 rep of squat without feeling like I will faint...it is very uncomfortable and sometimes I start to see dots appearing in my vision...is there a way to prevent this from happening? Maybe I lack enough iron in my blood? Should I take supplements to prevent it?

iC-

What you're feeling isn't unusual.

Here's a thought...

Prior to your lift, perform the valsalva and REALLY ramp up the pressure. Now let the air out and wait about ten seconds...you'll probably feel that same faint feeling. As soon as your head clears you should be ready to lift. Go through your normal routine and make sure that you are tightening everything up from the bottom to top in that order.

I had the same issue, especially on Deadlifts and this method has worked wonders for me.

Otherwise, get a spotter to catch you...

You mean performing the valsalva before the deadlift, and also during the deadlift, correct?

Once before...just to get your body ready.

And then again, when you lift.

And not to put to fine a point on it, tighten from the bottom up. Think of what a fighter pilot's "G-suit" does...it provides pressure from the bottom to the top, not top down trapping the blood in the legs.
