I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Cheers AD69 - Yeah I thought I'd give the deadlifts a bash knowing I've got a break. I was going to deload to 50kg on the squats but we'll see when I'm working through the warm up sets on my first session back.

Yep, expensive but it must feel good whacking on all that muscle. I'm finding that I'm shrinking; I had to wear my suit last Sunday for the Christening and I needed a belt to keep my trousers up. The time I wore it before it was a struggle getting into the trousers.

About the Villa - Petrov has been great this season. We were doing fine until Laursen got injured and those cheeky Toffees (MarkG is a git) knocked us out of the FA Cup. Also I think a few teams sussed us out and we rode our luck a little. Top 6 is a good finish so hopefully MON will spend some dosh on decent players and we'll attempt the top 4 next season and maybe break into it in a few years. We'll see.

Are you in favour of Celtic and Rangers joining the premiership?

I'm not sure about Celtic & Rangers joining - we would struggle initially, and no guarantee that the extra revenues would contribute to on-field success.

In the MON years, I think we would hold our own - as shown by tanking Liverpool and Blackburn in the Uefa Cup! This season, we can't even beat a financially constrained Rangers to the title.

I like qualifying for the CL every year almost by default, that wouldn't happen in the premiership. I'd rather be playing Barca than Hull!

I don't think it will happen unless they expand the league to c.24 teams, as no-one will want to vote themselves out of a cash cow.

Had a great holiday but I paid for it this morning. I've put on about 4kg of blubber made of guinness, shite food and tonnes of chocolate.

Sunday 31 May 2009

Squats @ 50kg: 5,5,5,5,5
Bench Press @ 60kg: 5,5,5
Inverted Rows: 5,6,6,5,4
20 mins on treadmill

Squats started off poor but something just clicked during the 3rd set. Everything felt great - almost easy. I really felt strength coming from the hips and hamstrings. Going to stay @ 50kg and get consistent with all reps.

Bench Press was easy. I'll add 5kg next time.

Inverted Rows were hard work.

20 mins on the treadmill with the new mp3 player but I was b#ll#xed after 15 mins.

Glad to be back at it. Felt great on holiday playing footy and cricket - I felt so fit and didn't feel so lathargic all the time - a big improvement on last year.

It's great when you notice those little differences in everyday activities due to the training. I realised that I can now use a higher gear on my bike when I climb the hill near my house.
Hope you had a good holiday and I'm sure you'll shed the Guinness gut in no time.

Cheers Rere and Dave for checking up on me. I'm off the guinness until Friday night; then I'll treat myself to a few. Got 18 cans of the stuff chilling nicely in my "beer" fridge. Hopefully they'll last me all month?

Tuesday 2 May

Stretches, warm up on treadmill
Squats 51.8kg: 5/5/5/5/5
Overhead Press 41.8kg: 5/5/5
Deadlift 101.8kg: 5

Squats – Felt great throughout. I probably could add 5kg but I want to get my form consistent. I’ll add just the 2.5kg next session.

Overhead Press – Felt quite easy but I know adding just 2.5kg will make a hell of a difference. Looking forward to see how I cope.

Deadlift – Focused on really squeezing the bar. Must get a 7ft bar and some new weights. Been looking for a while but I could do with a standard 7ft bar that can deal with around 150kg & I'm having trouble finding one. I can't afford to go Olympic just yet.

Finished off with 25 mins on treadmill. It all felt quite easy today and I was shocked because we had a bad night with our baby. I felt warmed up within minutes and felt flexible during the first warm up set of squats. Usually it takes me a few sets to get going. I also got everything wrapped up in 105mins which is pretty quick for me.

Been eating super clean for a couple of days and I already feel better about myself. It's been easier getting back into Stronglifts mode this time after a holiday.

Phone them, check out there oly set packages, and ask if they can do a deal. Can usually knock off 10-15% off web prices.

I would recommend saving up for this, rather than spend money on a standard bar, that will bend and warp at higher weights.

If you need variation on the deadlift, look in to doing sumo style, or SLDL.

Save what you can each week, and you'll soon have enough for the bar.

Another way to look at it - if you had a gym membership of c.£40 a month, it'll only take 6 months to pay for itself.

Cheers AD69. I totally agree with you but money is v tight at the moment and I need to increase my Deadlift now while I’m on a roll with them. I’ve ordered a standard 7ft bar that can handle 140kg it only cost £28 delivered so that will keep me going for a while until I can afford to go oly.

Thursday 4 June

Stretches, warm up on treadmill
Squats 54.3kg: 5/5/5/5/5
Bench Press 66.8kg: 5/5/5
Inverted Rows: 7/8/6/5/5
25 mins on treadmill

Squats – A few form issues – nothing major; I’ll work at them as I increase the weight. Still felt quite light.

Bench Press – No problems.

Inverted Rows felt much better than last time I did them

An easy week to get me back into the swing of things. I’ve lost the bloated feeling I acquired on holiday and amazingly I've lost 6 pounds in under 1 week. All I've done is just returned to what I was doing before the holiday; eat every 3 hours, only carbs after a workout, loads veg/salad/fruit/water/chicken, eggs, beef & too much cottage cheese. I'm 100% with this Monday to Friday, then relax a little at weekends. It's working; I feel great. 8)

Is there an echo in here?

Good work getting back into it. Amazing what a bit of good behaviour can do for fat loss.

I'm the same, try to be good during the week as much as possible (no drinking during the week, eating right, etc). Then weekends, I'll keep an eye on things, but don't feel guilty if I splurge.

Couldn't be as strict even as the 90/10 rule!

Good stuff mate. The diet sounds likes its working a treat. Hopefully mine will be similar once I'm in the groove with it.

What a dimwit. Our tinternet connection is playing up, but yes Markg I feel that "great"! You'll get there with the diet mate; just as I'll get up with your squats stats one day.

@ AD69 - You got it - during the week I'm a good boy but at weekends I like to dabble in a bit of reality. It keeps me human and I appreciate it more.

Got the new bar. I feel a bit sad as I've looked at it for a while marvelling at it's engineering! It's an 'effing monster compared to the Barbie bar I got from Argos. What a kn#b

Sunday 6 June

Squats @ 56.8kg: 5,5,5,5,5
Ohp @ 44.3kg: 5,5,5
Deadlift @ 105kg
30 mins on treadmill

Squats were great. 4th & 5th reps were hard during last set. I'm definately staying in the groove and really stretching the hams getting some power from them as I come up. Never really had that feeling before.

Ohp felt like hard work during 2nd set but I'm moving the weight up next time. It's almost a year to the day that I started lifting weights - I wasn't doing Stronglifts but I checked my notes and I found an entry saying that 35kg on the ohp felt too heavy. I know it's not much heavier but I'm going in the right direction.

Deadlift - Used the new bar with my bags of pebbles etc & it felt good :D . Grip was going on 5th rep though :( .

The treadmill was easy today. Found some new tunes and it really helps listening to stuff I'm not familiar with. I spent some time stretching my hams after to round it all off.

I'm writing this up enjoying a glass of red wine before The Apprentice final with the wife taking the mick. She watched "Extreme Male Beauty" with me and she reckons I'm constantly doing Jelq (whatever it's called - streching my wonga) and drinking my own p#ss. She doesn't realise that we're all real men here and we don't bother with that sh#te. Just off to do my nails & wax me sack

Can't wait to read about your reaction when you get an Oly bar in your hands - you'll probably be polishing it every night!
Good solid workout FB, keep it going. I've got a feeling you'll be passing that 140kg DL sooner than you think - better start picking out your Oly bar now. :D

Hey Foxy, nice OHP.

I started lifting properly about a year ago (although had lifted weights off and on for last 14 years or so).

I always think that my squats have not passed previous max, but one thing is clear, those old PRs were not full squats.

With the OHP, its such a hard exercise to add weight on, the progress needs to be relative - you've increase it by 27% on what was considered heavy last year. Great progress.

My wife thinks I'm mad too, but she likes the results!
