I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Cheers Mark - Yep, you're right; I did more than watch - I had 4 pints of guinness and one of the most filthiest cheeseburgers I've ever eaten. Had a great few hours but our eldest got so bored that we left before the end. Worth going though; seeing Jimmy Marku (apologies if I've spelt this wrong) toy with the axle squat was unbelievable. I also met our Stronglift's mighty "Mouse" in person. 8)

@ Tuff - Cheers for looking in. I'm struggling with the old legs - too many years of being a lazy piss head but I'm slowly making progress. I think I'll be where I want to be in a few years. Yes, up at 4am on Tuesdays and Thursdays - it's the only time I can do it. I have a lie-in until the kids wake up on Sundays; usually 6am! God love 'em.

Sunday 5th July

Squats @ 66.8kg=5/5/5/5/5
Overhead Press @ 48kg=5/5/4
Deadlift @ 112.5kg=3
Treadmill for 15 mins

The squats felt much better than Thursday; I found a good rhythm. Did these at 3 mins rest; going to try at 2 mins rest before I knock the weight up.

The first set on the ohp was soooo heavy. Then it went swimmingly until the final rep - my back arched way too much - not good enough.

Deadlifts -I decided to warm up with 5x60kg, then 3x90kg. I normally do 3x80kg. I think this is the reason why I could only muster 3 reps @ 112.5kg. I did 5x90kg after just to make me feel better.

I met up with the old band members last Friday for a jam. It's been about a year since we last played. They couldn't believe how well I looked! Thanks Stronglifts :D

Good to meet you too Dave - we left just before they announced the winner although Big Loz seemed to be running away with it.
I don't know about you - but I felt like a 6 stone weakling with all those big guys around.

Oh - and I noticed you guzzling the guinness and burgers - so i'm expecting those squat numbers up.

Congrats on the compliments you're getting. That's good feedback isn't it? As for the squats, continue to respect them, and soon they may become your favorite lift. I know they're mine, but they've humbled me more than once!

Cheers Mouse and Tuff

Tuesday 7 July

Warm up on treadmill, stretches
Squats 66.8kg @ 2 mins rest: 5/5/5/5/5
Bench Press 66.8kg @ 1 mins rest: 5/5/5/4/3
Inverted Rows @ 1 min rest: 8/8/6/5/7
Press Ups @ 1 min rest: 20/16/7
30 mins on treadmill

Squats – These felt good but I didn’t find that rhythm I found on Sunday. I thought things may have been harder as I reduced the rest time; but it was a little easy at times. I’ll increase the weight. :D

Bench Press – These actually felt like hard work. Only having the 1 minute rest really got me fired up. Didn’t count the last rep in 4th set because form went out the window – I had to fight like hell to get the bar back up.

First time I’ve done press ups during a session for a while. I got to 15 in the first set and thought it was all too easy then it just kicked in. The last set was pathetic – my arms felt good though.

Can’t believe I did so much in 1 hour 15 mins. I had enough time to do a 30 minute run.

I thought I’d struggle this morning because I felt like shite yesterday, sleep has been poor the last few nights (kids have chicken pox) and we had the crappy news yesterday that my wife will most likely be losing her job. Got a great buzz from this workout though and I feel ready to deal with whatever shit gets thrown at me.

Nice solid workout Dave. I'm sure watching all those 20 stoners got you fired up.

Hi Dave,
Hope you sort out the mrs job situation mate. I'm sure you will. Tell her she can have my job :D

Can't imagine doing those weights with 1 min rest. I'm a 5 minuter all the way!

Cheers Guru and Mark

@ Markg - Thanks mate. She's no where near as funny as you so she can't have your job as being the Stronglift's Comedian. I think we're going to find out on Monday whether she lost it or not (the job that is). It's not going to have a major impact on things because childcare & after school costs account for almost 70% of the salary she earns. We'll see.

Thursday 9 July

Stretches, warm up on treadmill
Squats 69.3kg @ 2 mins rest: 5/4/4/5/5
Overhead Press 48kg @ 3 mins rest: 5/5/4
Deadlift 100kg: 5
Treadmill for 15 mins

Squats – Really please with these. I was finding good rhythm and feeling it in all the right places. Didn’t count some reps in 2nd and 3rd set; I was getting cocky in the 2nd set thinking it was easy and I lost the focus and I leant a little too much forward on a rep in the 3rd set. I’ll repeat until I get 5x5.

Overhead Press – I’m getting pissed off with these but I get most of us are. It’s no big deal – to be honest I don’t give a shite about them; squats are my main concern. I’ll deload to 42.5kg.

Deadlift – I added a few more warm up sets and it didn’t effect the working set. Felt good. I’ll add more weight next time.

Another great week and the fat continues to fall off. :D

Hi Dave,
I know exactly what you mean about childcare costs. Hundreds of ££s a month and it's hardly worth the mrs going to work. Trouble with us is we can't quite manage to pay all the bills with my wage alone...

Same here Mark. We're lucky that our mortage has come down by over £300 the past few months. We could just about manage if the rates stay the same but when they go up we'll have to be even more frugal. The good thing is we've saved loads since I gave up smoking and cut back on the beer.

Got this from one of my early posts back when I started;

"My goals for 2009 are;

 loose 3 inches off the gut measurement (get into 34” trousers; I currently wear 36”)
 Squat 5x5 110kg; currently at 37.5kg and feeling noticing improvements
 Deadlift 1x10 125kg (I’ll explain another time); currently at 90kg
 Bench Press 5x5 90kg; currently at 67.5kg
 Overhead Press 5x5 60kg; currently at 42.5kg"

We'll I've cracked the first one. I'm comfortably in 34" trousers; I could probably be in 32" ones in a few months but I think they'd be tight around my legs. I'm going to carry on doing what I'm doing until after my birthday then it's full on eating more and getting strong.

Sunday 12 July

Warm up on treadmill, stretching
Squats 69.3kg @ 3 mins rest: 5/5/4/4/4
Bench Press 66.8kg @ 1min rest: 5/5/5
Inverted Rows: 8/8/7/6/6
Press Ups: 15/15/15
45 mins on treadmill

Squats were hard work but I'm getting there. I'm not counting the reps that didn't feel right.
Bench was easy.
Inverted Rows were more testing today.
Press Ups felt good in last set and the run was fun listening to some crap I liked when I was a teenager. Happy days! :D

Jesus Mark; nothing as morbid and dark as your list. You must have been an angry teenager! I was, and still am to a degree, into U2, Echo & The Bunnymen, The Alarm, The Cult, Killing Joke, Living Color etc etc. I saw Black Sabbath at the NEC on their Last Supper Tour and that then introduced me to metal; so I got into Metallica, Machine Head etc etc. Then we had our daughter and that introduced me to full on Disney Princess songs

Dave, at that point in time I only had my Barbie Barbell from Argos which could only handle 125kg. Now I've got a bar that can handle 140kg so I'll be aiming for that in due course.
