I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

I'm down to 13 and a half stone which is where I wanted to be for my 40th.

Excellent work!! Self confidence ususally increases when the waistline decreases which is the best. When is the big day and when is the power cage arriving?!

Cheers Guru - Yep, I feel as light as a butterfly floating through a meadow of pansies.

@ Markg - I'm enjoying the read thanks Mark. I can see a few mistakes that I'm making already and I'm only on page 40! It's going to take time, but that elusive bw squat will be mine.

@ Kathy - I certainly do feel more confident. The cage has arrived; I'll get it assembled on Sunday pending a major major hangover. I'm out on an all dayer this Saturday to celebrate my 40th..which is next Wednesday the 14th. The thing is I'm in better shape now than when I was 21 years old. Crazy and sad...but true.

Tuesday 6 October 2009

Soft tissue, incline walk, stretches.
Squats @ 56.8kg: 5/5/5
Bench @ 61.8kg: 8/8/10
Inverted Rows: 10/10/8
Prones: 3 sets @ 40 secs
Barbell Complex @ 25.8kg
Stretches.

Squats felt good but need an overhaul after reading part of The Squats chapter in Starting Strength.

Everything else was sound. Really pleased at how easy the bench was. Time to get heavy again now that I've got the power gage. Loved the barbell complex.

I'm sure your 'power gage' will be off the scale in no time mate! :)

Foxy, must be feeling good mate. I'm also in better shape now than at 21! I see that as a good thing! I'm so much stronger now.

Pulling together the cage is probably quite a good thing with a hangover, something that you can just shut yourself away and work on quietly.

Thursday 10 October 2009

Soft tissue work, incline walk, stretches
Squats: Worked on form – didn’t count sets or reps and worked @ various weight.
Overhead Press: 50kg: 3/3/1
Deadlift: 110kg: 5
Prones 3 sets @ 50 secs
Barbell Complex @ 30kg
Stretches

Trying to incorporate all the stuff I’ve read into my squats. It was hard work and a good step in the right direction. Thought I’d go a little heavier on the press but failed miserably. The deadlifts felt great but I haven’t read that chapter yet so I’m probably doing them wrong! Used my new weights and they smelt very nice.

I was late starting again due to our little girl being poorly and not settling so easy. Was pleased though; I didn’t rush and went through my thorough warm up routine. Lesson learned.

It will be interesting to see what next week brings. Family and friends will be coming round to join in my celebrations so I don’t think I’ll get much done. Must get the power cage up though and start eating more. Looking forward to the next few months.

Saturday 10 October 2009 - Got through too many sets of guinness presses but thoroughly enjoyed the day (or at least what I can remember of it).

Sunday 11 October 2009 - Got the power cage up. I was pretty impressed considering I couldn't engage the brain to even speak when I first woke.

Foxy, I'd also recommend the SS DVD, I found it easier to follow than the book (i.e. you can see exactly the movement you need). It helped me with my bench and OHP, which I've bust through recent plateaus.

And I'd maybe test that cage before you use it - don't want it falling on your head mid set!

Cheers AD69, I'll take your advice and get it ordered.

Tuesday 13 October 2009

Soft tissue, incline walk, stretches.
Squats @ 60kg: 5/5/5/5/5
Bench @ 60kg: 5/5/5/5/5
Inv Rows: 10/8/8
Prones: 3 x 40 secs
Squats @ 40kg: Loads of sets - just trying things out

This was my first session with all my new clobber and last one being 39. Lost a lot of time getting things set up but really enjoyed it. The squats seemed a lot easier using the 7 foot bar and unracking within the cage. I'll be honest my old set up was a "wreck" waiting to happen - and it did a few times.

I just focused on form, form, form. Usually the squats seem harder than the bench but it was the other way round tonight. Looking forward to the next few months.

Happy Birthday Dave!!! Welcome to the 40's....it the NEW 30's didn't ya know?!!

How long before you put the Guinness down and get back to your rack? I'm so jealous of your home setup. If you get a chance, post a picture. I agree w/AD69...the SS DVD was very helpful and I still review parts of it when I need to remind myself of some of the cues.

Cheers AD69, Blueblah and Kathy. Yep, I'm an old fecker now but loving it....I feel great.

It's been a crazy 2 weeks with my birthday, our youngest's 1st birthday, my favourite Uncle's 60th....I've been hitting alcohol and birthday cake like there's no tomorrrow.

Managed to get 2 sessions in during the last week. Not really worth writing the numbers down; I've focused on form and I'm definately getting there. I'm eating pretty good apart from the cake!!! Really enjoying Starting Strength and can't wait to get the dvd.

Stronglifts has been banned at my work (amongst other sites!) so my access is even more limited now...bugger.

Bedtime routine calls..........

Respectable draw between Everton and Villa at the weekend mate. Hopefully we can actually win a game soon though!

@ AD69 - Thanks for checking up on me mate. I'm still knocking the workouts out but missed yesterdays due to a serious bout of sickness and the runnies over the weekend. I must have been ill - I had no beer.

I'm loving my new set up. It's really inspired me; I'm just as enthusiastic with it all as when I started. Maybe I should get out more?

I'm still reading Starting Strength. Happy with progress on squats, bench is sound but after reading the deadlift chapter I need some practice. I'm pleased with my findings though and hope that the knowledge will get my numbers up in good time.

I can't access Stronglifts at work now so I'm seriously slacking on my log and everyone elses. I get on every now and then at home but usually get disturbed by the kids, the wife or the mother in law on the phone. Hay bloody ho.

@ Markg - Yeah a fair result Mark. I remember you lot having a bad start last season but you came gunning up the rear at the climax. No offence.

Laters....
