I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

I can do 1.5 litres of milk and 4 eggs a day, but I want more :). Other than that, it's mostly rice, so I'm not getting enough protein.

I stay in hostel and eat mess food :). Not much control over what I eat. Dal is offered, but not on a regular basis. Of course, I can eat moong dal in packets. And groundnuts. But they're a bit expensive to buy regularly.

Let's see - 1 litre of milk is Rs. 24/- & gives you about 650 kcal & 34 gms of protein. In comparison, 150 gm. of groundnut should cost about Rs. 20/- & will give you about 800 kcal & 37-38 gm of protein. I've found groundnut / channa / moong dal to be the cheapest protein sources. With the groundnut you get an awful lot of fat though (about 50%).

Honestly, the real problem with nuts is that I'm wearing braces. They hurt my teeth like hell. Once they come off, yes, I can go back to groundnuts. Fat isn't a problem for me, I'm very skinny. Milk is offered in the mess, so I can drink it every morning and evening. And are you referring to the milk in packets, that you're supposed to boil before drinking? I can't cook anything here.

The milk in packets is pasteurised - you don't need to boil it before drinking, although we do it in India out of habit. Many also prefer to drink hot milk.

I drink half litre milk after my workout - straight from the packet. However, I don't drink it ice cold - I've experienced some gas problem with that.

wow this form has started buzzing really big time.

Electric urad daal is also a good source of protein and should be easy on your braces. Just soak it for 5-6 hrs and it should be soft.

Didn't know that. Thanks for the tip. Can all daal be eaten raw or do some have to be cooked? Up till now, in my head, moong daal was the only thing I could consume in packets. And even that was cooked and salted (haldirams).

I've always suspected that :). Good, one problem less. And yet another opportunity. I happen to like ice cold milk :)

guru what's your opinion on paneer? and you consume rice only post workout?

also how one earth do we measure the weight of these food items? all the sites have things like such and such of 100g/150g/200g contain so many proteins. Problem is how do we know how many grams of chicken/fish/daal/rice/whatever we are eating?

It's not like we have those scientific weighing machines which measure things in g/mg etc

Paneer is normally very high in fat, unless you make it at home using skimmed milk. Rice only post workout.

Measuring - Go by feel. To get the feel do this - Whenever mum buys a kg / half kg of grains, ake a normal bowl & measure how many bowls are there in a kg. You should get a good approximation by extrapolating that.

As for vegetables, it's by gut feeling. Doesn't matter much since the major nutrients from veggies are vitamins.

Hi All,

From Delhi, currently working in Mumbai. Great stuff shree, guru and all you other guys.

Guru, could you recommend some substitutes for paneer? And are you absolutely sure that home-made paneer from skim-milk will be low fat? Have you tried making any at home? Any idea where one could get cottage cheese? Sorry for bombarding you with all these questions. Really don't know who else I could ask.

I have high body-fat and am trying to get rid of it. So I don't think eating paneer everyday would be such a good idea.

Hi dafreaking, welcome aboard.

No problem with the questions. All the fat in paneer / cheese comes from the milk only. So if you skim the milk beforehand, the paneer will naturally have low fat. Now how good it will taste is another thing. I've not made any at home - too lazy for that maybe, another reason being I don't have too much of fat to loose, so I don't think it's worth all that effort for me. At the same time, I believe it's not all that difficult.

As for cottage cheese, I'm totally at a loss locating it. I could locate something at Shoprite hyper in Mulund, but it's paneer named as cottage sheese & has a high fat. The most low fat cheese I could get was mozzarella cheese by Amul & even that has pretty high fat (16-17%). All others have 25-26%.

You could eat a lot of curd (again made from skimmed milk) if you're comfortable with it.

edit - I you have alot of fat to get rid of, first cut out sugar from your food, except for fruit.
