I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Hi all,

I'm looking for a way to fill out my midsection. I have a small waist so my torso is a bit hourglass-shaped. I actually only do chin-ups (no pull ups) because I think bigger lats will aggrevate the situation.

Any tips?

Note that I train (SL 5x5, +-1 year) in a home gym with powerrack & barbell. So no cables & free weights.

Here's me (28yo):

I have the opposite, a big midsection!

Chin ups work lats aswell, there is no point in neglecting pull ups. Lats come down all the way to near your hips (or at least mine do)

If you want to get bigger in the middle, you should eat a lot more (including carbs) and do lots of intensive ab work,

hanging leg raises/crunches, dumb bell side bends and the stuff thats part of SL.

Progress with squats should enlarge you lower/middle back which should help too.

@ OP - I can't see the image b/c of the network here but usually a small waist is considered a good thing. Not sure why you would want to bulk it up.

I don't want it completely gone but it needs to fill out a bit. My hips and upper legs are quite big so it looks unbalanced (to me at least).

You are going to have to add some additional bulk. Eat more and Deadlift!

Fill out your chest, shoulders and lats. There's nothing wrong with your mid-section, you're just bottom half large.

you can't get rid of that. what you have to do is widen your back and shoulders so that your hips look normal sized. make sure you ARE doing those chins and pulls.

and by the way, if you think chin ups wont build you lats you're mistaken. Chin ups arent all biceps (can you really curl you own bodyweight?) Chins dont work your lats less than pullups, they just get extra help from the arms. It's still a lat exercise but they are less isolated.
Why are you squatting in the curl rack?

Friend, you just need to do a lot of heavy squats and deadlifts, get your strong guy gut going on.

Erm the only way to get rid of that is to get a fat belly lol. It's not a problem that you have an hourglass midsection, it's just that you are really skinny and have little upper body.
