I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

2. Ignore them, laugh it off and they will stop eventually.

You can always walk away slowly before casually looking back and saying: " You coming? I have to finish my workout. Might as well finish on you." a la 'Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story'. Note: It helps if you're Asian, cocky as hell, ripped and a master of Jeet Kune Do. If none of these apply you may just want to realize that those guys haven't matured since high school, and know that you are above their callow bullshit. You've got to stay cool in the clutch. Your stoic face and lack of a reaction is more unnerving than any of the clever quips we could come up with.

Guys, guys, guys... Just set their cars on fire.

How old are you? If you've been out of school for a while, hopefully they've matured a little by now (by the sounds of it they haven't) and won't want to beat you up if you stand up for yourself (non-violently). If they do kick your ass, you could get a restraining order or get them banned from the gym. Problem solved, but it may cost you a couple of teeth.

From your post:

1. You’re “super scrawny”

2. Appear to be a “Beaner” (slang for Mexican, but pretty much applied to anyone from south of the border).

3. Go by the logon “Muerte” (translation: Death).

These guys may be d-bags, but let me ask you if your not bringing some of this on your self – just so we can eliminate this as a cause.

I see a lot of these super skinny (or really fat) Hispanic kids that look like a Mexican Alice Cooper. They wear tight assed shirts, girls low rise jeans, all kinds of mascara and eye liner, studs poked in everywhere. I see some, not many, but some, go in their Goth gear to the gym. That’s not you, right?

How much and HOW DEEP are they squatting?
If the do 1/2, 1/4 squats, no matter how heavy they are, then bet them to do your squat weight 5x5, but ATG, play their game, let's see how they fare.
I know you really, really want it Nefesh, but is not in anyone's best interest. Not even yours

@TakeFive: Who gives a shit what Muerte's wearing to the gym?!? It's completely irrelevant. What matters is that he is IN the gym and has the determination to LIFT.

@Muerte: I'm with Rugger on this one. Take that aggression out on the iron. It's amazing how emotion (anger, frustration, etc.) can help you tear through your sets.

lol no, i'm not into the whole emo thing. also, my father would disown me. i usually go right after work so i'm in dickies pants and a regular sized t shit. I'm a junior high school, these guys are seniors.

This happened last week:

I lost my cool and set my bar at my feet and looked at them and said, "seriously?" with a "your an idiot" look on my face. they just started, a small dick joke was made and they walked away laughing. I'm going to do the whole ignore thing. But the fact that i didn't get a fistful says something about them.

Muerte, ignore them. Just focus on your workouts, if you stick at it consistently and long enough you'll pass them up. This shit seems important at your age, but be patient and continue to work on improving yourself and before you know it you'll be in better shape, and in a better place than any of those jerks.

Learn mma, become a master over the next 50 years... then show em who's boss sneak attack them while there in there wheel chairs.... or just smile and wink at them. I played a hockey team tonight they had 7 seniors... we have 9 skaters... we beat them 8-1. They talked shit all night.... all i had to do was say score board and they would flip out. I'm 130lbs, these kids were easily 3-5" taller and 30-40lbs heavier, They were good just mentally weak. Hell I'm a freshmen I was tearing them apart, so was the rest of my team... we never stopped...just kept pushing...until it was over.

there was this guy who took the 10kg plates off my 80 kg squat, leaving on 60kg on the bar and tried to emulate me and squat.

Needless to say, i was pissed because he couldnt even lift the damn thing up, and what's more, didnt place back the plates after using.

All while i was staring at him while resting on the bench beside the power rack.

How cool eh?

Well that pretty much explains the whole story. These are just boys that want to feel like men, so they find someone to be dominate over, either by intimidation, or just thru mocking. Stick to your workout and keep adding weight. These guys will soon recoginze you're not B.S.ing around and leave you alone.

This naïve “why should it matter” complaint always cracks me up. Time for a movie quote (Face Off /1997):

Castor Troy (to his daughter): If you dress like Halloween, ghouls will try to get in your pants.

So if you dress like a freak, it's reasonable that people may react to you like a freak show. This painful bit of obviousness has become too un-PC to teach apparently, as judged by a number of the job applicants I see these days.

Christ, we had one engineering applicant come in wearing a dress – and he was a man, baby! (My lesbian boss claimed she was going to hire him, but couldn’t figure out what the bathroom arrangements would be. I think she was kidding).

So why should it matter? If you dress funny, get laughed at, and don’t like it, then it matters. If it doesn’t bother you, it doesn’t matter. If trading your Richard Simmons dolphin shorts and sweat bands for a t-shirt and sweats solves the problem, that’s a pretty easy fix, no?

I am completely aware that appearances do, in fact, matter. Determining whether clothing is "business appropriate" or professional is almost 99% objective, but determining whether clothing at the gym is "funny" is pretty damn subjective.

The point I was trying to drive home is that determination is admirable. If someone's in the gym working their ass off, I at least have some respect for them regardless of how they dress.

So you're a 'skinny beaner' now. You'll be a strong, big motherf***in beaner in 6 months, so relax. You can laugh at them when you're squatting 225+lbs with ease, nice and deep. The bigger your squat, the bigger you will be.

From a psychological standpoint they're threatened by you, even if they won't admit it. That's what they're doing. Hyenas circle and 'laugh' to taunt lions out of fear. They know that the lion will rip any one of them to shreds so they like to taunt and play keep away. If you ever see them individually when you start adding some serious muscle, watch how quick they start acting nice to you.
