I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

So what would you classify as 'acceptable' gym gear?

Nonsense, I've had no complaints about my spandex top and thong combo.

I wonder if singlets count as appropriately dressed, that might explain why people were looking at me funny when I was training for my powerlifting competition.

that applies in my gym only. lols. the difference is obvious. people who are really working out just dress like they should.

One normally finds a sharp blow to the testicles to be quite effective.

Nah...seriously, try to ignore them, they're muppets.

Just because someone is big does not mean they can fight. Muscle does not automatically make you a fighter, it just intimidates people.

Everyone bleeds the same...

But hey, I'm not saying start a fight. Try to avoid them, but don't show your intimidation. Always remain calm and even if they are standing next to your locker, remain calm and just go about stuff as you usually do. You also seem to be very aware that they are there, hearing them laughing from across the gym, who cares what these guys think. Personally I am cold, The only time I ever feel crap or down is if I have upset someone close to me or someone I respect, anyone else can pi$$ off.

Wear some headphones, Talk to the nicer guys at the gym, Say hello to people when passing them in the corridor, soon enough you will find out who the regulars are, and even if it is just having a laugh with the instructor because you asked if he would spot you.

If these guys purposely do bring on something serious though. Make sure you get them back good, and when they least expect it. Or if you have a tough Dad, send him round saying, if your kids lay a finger on my son, just one finger, I will come round and beat you up for everytime they touch him.

To echo what most have been saying, I find that the best solution is just ignore them and focus on your own work-outs. If you allow others to dictate how you feel, then you give them control over your person, your emotions. By not letting their ridiculing laughter and immature remarks get into your head, you prove to be the stronger man. And if it ever comes down to where they taunt you to a fight, just know that the guys who talk the biggest BS go down pretty easily 90% of the time. No matter how much brawn you have, a few quick, deliberate punches to the head can knock anyone to the ground who isn't used to that sort of thing.

Bottom line, laugh off their pathetic attempts at intimidation and focus on improving yourself. Oh, and I would advise against ever bringing your dad to your defense unless there is literally no other option.

Focus on your training and, if there is one, befriend a bigger, stronger than them, guy. That helped me in the past.
Being a former skinny guy, I understand your plight. Several years of working out and doubling my bodyweight seems to have solved the problem.

Don't know if you're still reading this meurte, but i have seen that kind of thing before. Teenage boys are very insecure, they'll never admit it but going to the gym and being big is their thing, its part of whatever identity they are trying on. They are a little bit threatened by you being there and want to make sure you stay a skinny "beaner" (thats a new word to me, we dont have it where I'm from, i hope my repeating it is not awful). Don't let them.

Honestly they may be scared of other mexicans and feel like you are one they can take it out on. I can 100% guarantee that if you stick with it, put on some size and start moving some serious weight they will respect you eventually. I don't think they will if you stop. I think you've handled it well so far, you stood up for yourself and called them on it without going over the top. I wonder how it's going now.

seems the best way to show off is to play jokes on skinnier guys.. and that is an international thing..

I found my stats improved only when i stopped giving a shit about how skinny & ridiculous i look !! i focused on the bar and started enjoying the lifts for what they really are more than for how they made me look => and that was it ! big guys no longer bothered me - plus, even if they were still laughing, i wasn't paying attention and couldn't care less.

since when skinnier guys like us should burden shit all day long and feel bad about ourselves just because some dudes decided to make fun of us to impress the ladies ???? f*^ck them, i have no time to feel depressed because i'm too busy enjoying myself already.. these guys have 'history' with you because of high-school.. to be 100% honest with you: they will NEVER stop even in the year 2076. Only YOU can do something about it and that is to stop caring ! they might come at you & bother your lifts, but that will be the time for an official complaint.

thing is: serious lifters whether for strength or BB will respect you if you seem serious about what you're doing (come regularly, don't look down but straigth, not scared of asking questions/tricks to the bigger guys etc.).. and if they still don't, means they're asses not worth caring about.....

Mate, man up for god's sake. Ignore them and do your workout.

I'm 37 and weigh 260lbs - and it ain't muscle. When I walk through to the weights room at my gym I can see the look on everyone's faces and it says "what's that fat guy doing in here?". When I load 160kgs on the squat rack and do my sets no-one laughs at me.

Prove them wrong

im so lucky that in my gym, no one really bothers what you do, how you look, how yu train and how you act.

im short. only 5ft 3/161cm and 16. because its Asia, i dont have much of a problem with the size issue. What i do get really frustrated is that seeing people bench and squat in the smith using a weight lighter than my max and start giving me dirty look. for eg, i was squatting 70kgs the week before and these group of guys probably put bout 80kg on the smith. then gave me the ''im stronger'' look. i almost burst out laughing.

After reading some of the shit that goes on in some gyms (idiots, know-it-alls, wannabes etc) i feel so thankful that even though my gym is a fairly mainstream type gym (pop music on the television etc). That the ppl there are very nice, noone laughs at anyone or trys to tell ppl how to do the exercises.

The only time i hate my gym is obviously during the peak after work hours, 5pm-7pm. Not that its full of idiots, but that its very full, and also many ppl are chatting while hanging around equipment, and sometimes its hard to find space since its a fairly small gym.
Stats:
Bench: 97kg
Squat: 112kg
Deadlift: 117kg
OHP: 55kg
Dips: 40kg
Pull-ups: 22kg

The deadlift is not dead; size is dead without it.
