I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

grip strength

Postby kcker on Fri Nov 06, 2009 11:16 pm

Hi.
Is everyone satisfied with their grip strength?
Does anyone include specific routine to strengthen their grip, or its not needed when you followed SL5x5 for some time, meaning, your grip strength increases pretty good.

I believe that and awesome grip strength is a must in strength world. And SL5x5 is a program for REAL strength.
Not all objects in the world are shaped like a barbell. And if your grip is weak, your other muscles have to compensate for it, making a fairly light weighted object feel like your 1RM on your barbell.
Or, you might just not be able to lift grandmothers potato bag at all and she would have to help you with that, and in the end seeing your grandma doing most of the carry because your so hard trained muscles were not able to join in, because of the weak link (grip strength).

My grip strength is pathetic, don't ask me how many situations i had when i felt pathetic being not able to do this or that in front of other people, who drink, smoke or do other stuff except any strength work.

I hope it will improve when im done with SL beginners program.
Tell me it will :)
because stronglifts should be named as strongGYMlifts where no one except your coach cares how strong you get.

When you're deadlifting 2x bw with just chalk on your hands you'll have a strong grip.
No harm in doing some extra grip training though.

I feel that if i add 5 more kg on deadlift my grip will fail. (basically, on last set, i almost try to rush reps, because i hold BB with my fingertips.

I weight 80kg and i can DL 105kg 5x5
I train at home and there are no more weight plates to add and i dont think that by doing the same 105kg every workout, will increase strength in grip.

Do powerlifters do any extra grip training?
I tried many grip exercises but i dont see how many of them, especially BB wrist curls will help my DL. logically DL will help DL but its not happening.
sometimes i feel that my grip strength will fail me in 90% of my life :D

What an easy solution i think might help a lot - ill lower the DL weight and somehow add thickness to the bar :) how cool is that.

You could try lifting weight plates (no bar) by gripping the plates on their sides. Watch your toes if you try that method, but I can tell you it works.

yes, it would work my pinching strength, also an important one.
But i need to find an existing program or learn how to make a serious one myself, because my grip strength lacks a lot but i would love to be able to apply SL5x5 gained strength in real world.

What I do:
I always lift with double overhand. I always hold the bar for at least 5 seconds on the last rep of each set. That is more than enough for me, as I can lift 2xbw with double overhand now.

kcker- as far as finding a program you might wanna google jedd johnson of diesel crew-also he's on youtube he 's grip aficianado.

me personally, i made 2 inch grip handles out of pvc and pipe insulation-you also might wanna try picking up 1 hand size rocks and concrete or get some crazy ass super grippers or even some dumbell heavy farmer carries and also thicken the db handle to 2 inch.

i have the 2 giant silicon gel balls i squeeze- i named the first 1 pam and the other anderson.....

thanx HOBLE, for your input.
i found a way of to thicken BB - buy foam pipe at hardware store and there you go :)

farmers walk...forgot about that amazing exercise, its really taxing on many muscles...ill think of a way to blend this exercise into SL 5x5...my first guess is to do them on Press days.

for me, grip strength is the 1st most important feat. because i know, how bad it is to have it weak :P

I used to think my grip was weak. I didn't understand that any moisture (=sweat) on your palm makes the barbell hard to hold. I got chalk and now I can hold my 1RM DL with ease. If you wish to train your grip then the farmers walk is one of the best exercises.

Do you use chalk? This is the most important thing and should be addressed before anything else.

I've never used chalk, i like to train for and be able to apply my strength to real world situations where there is no chalk.
I also don't use the double overhand hold.

So, i have decided to buy a foam pipe and wrap it around dumbbells for farmers walk.
And i've read that i should use the foam pipe for all my BB exercises.

So i'll give it a try, for now, while i'm still using light weight.

And i also read :) that forearm strength helps in bench press and if it is so, then there is not a single exercise, where you wont benefit from a stronger grip.
Same with calves - strong calves can assist quads but not the way around.

Strength is general, not specific. A person who can hold 400lbs with chalk will have a stronger grip than a person who can hold 320lbs without chalk who has never held 400lbs. If your deadlift is stalled at say, 300lbs because you can't hold onto the bar and you use chalk and get your deadlift to 350lbs your grip strength will increase. This is much more efficient than doing specific grip training, because putting 50lbs on your deadlift will increase strength in other areas as well.

The "real world situations" argument doesn't apply because strength is general. You don't go around lifting barbells in the "real world", but someone with a 500lbs deadlift will have much less trouble picking up an awkward 150lbs crate than someone who has never lifted something over 200lbs.

eLvarouza, what do you mean by ''strength is general" ?
just curious, is there a definition?

i think you solved my problem, by saying that a person who can hold 400lbs DL will have stronger grip in general. its so obvious.
DL uses support grip but other two types of grips should improve as well.

do you recommend me buying more weight plates + chalk so i can progress with my DL or still - deload DL and thicken my BB?
