I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Gym chalk substitute

Postby Subdeacon on Sat Nov 07, 2009 2:36 pm

OK, odd question. I'm just starting StrongLifts and want to try using chalk instead of gloves or nothing at all. However, cash flow is a little tight and I'm not sure when I'll be able to get any from the sporting goods store or order online. In the mean time, can I crush up some of my kid's sidewalk chalk and use that? Bright colors aside, is it essentially the same thing?

It should work.

Should work. Another idea is to use pieces from old bicycle tyre tubes. I have tried this & it also works fine. Very inexpensive too. -

Black board chalk is usually made of calcium sulfate, and sometimes has other stuff added to make it a little less powdery. Gymnastic chalk is usually magnesium carbonate, and is by design very powdery.

So, no, its not exactly the same thing. It may work any way though, I've never tried. My guess is the kids sidewalk chalk would be more gunky.

I spent some time teaching in Vietnam, where most classrooms had chalk boards. By the end of each class my hands (and the rest of me) would be covered in chalk dust. It definitely dried them out, a little too much actually. But I would say it would work.
