I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Head Pain

Postby Jackbenimble7 on Wed Nov 04, 2009 10:42 pm

Hey guys, longtime reader, first time poster.

I've been on Stronglifts for about a month now. It's doing wonders for my skinny body; I can already see the gains I'm making. However, last week I was doing the push-ups part of the workout and I experienced a really bad pain on the back left side of my head. I was straining myself as hard as I could to get those extra few push-ups in, and as soon as I released the tension, the pain in my head exploded. I finished my workout however, not pushing myself as hard, but a throbbing ache remained for the rest of the day, and I had to take aspirin every couple hours to control it.

It went away over the weekend. However, on Monday, I was doing chin-ups, and the same thing happened. I exerted myself to the best of my ability, trying to get that last rep in, and when I released the tension, the pain was rippled across the left backside of my head again. It felt like enormous throbs of pain inside my brain, and it didn't go away as fast this time. I've been taking aspirin over the last couple days, and now it seems back to normal, but I'm scared of going to the gym and having this happen again. It's pretty painful, and I'm especially worried that I could have something going on inside my head.

Anyone ever heard of this or have any pointers on what I could do?

Thanks a lot.

I've been getting these occasionally, ever since I did a session while badly hungover. So don't do that.

Are you drinking enough? Dehydration can be a cause. Are you holding your breath for an entire set? That can definitely be a cause; learn to breath between each rep. Are you just lifting too much or pushing yourself too hard? Sounds as if that may be a factor.

Also, don't lift while hungover. Worth saying twice.

It was an especially long weekend (Halloween in Santa Barbara) but I wasn't hungover on Monday. Maybe it is my breathing, but I was making pretty sure to breathe correctly, especially on Monday so that the pain would not come back.

I'll definitely start drinking more water and work on my breathing. Hopefully it helps.
