I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Help me please its getting hard to finish 5x5

Postby jmaori on Tue May 19, 2009 10:24 am

hey names jarrod im from new zealand i love ur workouts etc

before i read this site etc i was just going to the gym and using machines not really getting anywhere

so i started ur guide( as i call it) i started squat weight @ 60kg bench @ 40kg etc etc, everything was going well but im coming close to my own weight which is 125kg. My last workout i did 110kg and its getting to a point where i almost cant finish my 5x5 i struggled to finish my squats but i dont wanna stop or go back in weight. im doing 2.5kg adding every workout

My diet atm is very low on carbs and im on a limited budget hence why all foods are the same everyday

Breakfast - bowl of porridge + fish oil tablet + protein shake(EAS whey protein)

Lunch - chicken breast salad or 4-6 egg chicken breast +mushrooms + onions + spring onion omelette

Dinner - Steak or ground beef or chicken breast or lamb chops + salad or boiled vege's

i realise i need to eat more everyday but im a solo father and dont earn very much at the moment so my budget is very low, if u could also tell me cheap options to eat between these meals.

ive stopped eating potatoes, bread, rice, pasta as i wanted to lose fat faster

i do eat steak + chops with fat on it also chicken with skin on(are these major if so please tell me so i can stop)

i dont eat carbs post workout(if i need to please tell me,also if need be what would the best option be to eat post workout e.g white rice or brown??)

please if u could help me out on this

thanking you in advance

Jarrod

P.S its only the squats thats slowing me down atm and i dont want to drop them, because i play rugby and its awesome helps alot, i also ride a push bike alot and its good to warm up etc

Re-read the ebook. It will tell you all you need to know about stalling.

There is no shame in deloading when you fail 3x in a row at a weight. The fact that you are at 110kg already is great. Just ensure that your form is right, and that you are going below parallel in the squat. Remember, failure means technical failure, where your form suffers to get the weight up (i.e. not going as low, knees coming in). You could drop the weight back down to 100kg, and work back from there. It should help you get past your current plateau.

Hey, first of all - how is your form on squats? Great work on getting so far without stalling. If you read the FAQ (here: stronglifts-5x5-official-faq-t11443.html) you will see that it's common to stall. The FAQ is long btw, but I do recommend reading it. Have you read the ebook? Anyway - brief summary in your case is that it will get harder as you go along, and as long as you can maintain good form you should keep pushing. When you cant keep good form anymore you can count that as a failed rep, and if you fail to complte 5x5 with good form 3 times in a row you should deload (a heavy or a soft deload, both mean taking off some weight, again the definitions are in the FAQ). And remember that the fact that it's getting hard doesnt mean it's not working - just means that now is when you really are challenging yourself and therefore will see greater results!

As for the diet I think someone else than me can give you better advice, but you should definitely get some carbs post workout, for example drinking some milk is good.

i always go below parallel bro and i havent failed a weight yet, was just saying its starting to get real hard to finish, was just wondering if it was because im not eating enough but u say its technical failure so i will go back to 100kg thanks for that mate

Jarrod - Welcome to SL

You can't progress indefinately. There will always be a point when you start to stall - it's part of the lifting game - don't think of it as a failure - more of a stepping stone to larger weights.

More food? Yes that will help with the progression, but also make sure you are getting enough sleep and rest.

Check the links on the blog pages for tips on how to get cheap protein on a budget and when to eat carbs (best trying to limit to POST WO if you can).

Personally I find tinned fish cheap to buy and good for a protein source.
I can easily put away 2 tins of tuna throughout the day to up the protein from real food.
Make friends with your local butcher and see if you can get any deals or check the supermarket for the reduced meats coming up to their 'use by' dates.

Keep lifting and maybe start a log on here to get some more feedback

Kia ora eh hoa, always good to get another kiwi on board. Where are you from? I'm in Hamilton, and there's plenty of other kiwis in the forum.

The log is like the link in my sig. Record all the weights you lifted and how you felt etc. It's a great motivator as you can look back and see that your old max is now your warm-up weight. (edit: mouse beat me to it, greased lightning that man  )

I should be able to come up with some food tips, but it will have to be tomorrow when I have more time.

You could consider switching to 3 sets of 5 reps for your squats, and more oats are always good. As for the fat on the meat that you eat, it's very much a good thing, don't stop.

Getting strong does help with rugby, doesn't it :).

Eat nuts/peanut butter between meals. They are relatively cheap, very convenient, dont go bad and Highly dense in good fat & protein. Perfect in between meal snacks. Try your best to eat more often, wash it all down with milk.

I'll second eating lots of nuts. I eat either mixed nuts or peanuts on a daily basis, 100g peanuts gives approx 600cals! Helped me gain 6.5lbs in my first 2 weeks.
