I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Hip Pain From Squatting

Hi, I need help fixing a problem I'm having that is preventing my progress on the squat. My left hip hurts pretty bad whenever I come back up. The pain goes away after a while, that is, it doesn't last for more than about 15 mins altogether, but it happens every time I squat a heavy weight, so it is probably something that I am doing wrong, since I have never had trouble with my hip before. It hurts bad enough to keep me from completing my sets ( I can usually get one done before it's too much). Any idea what might be causing it? I'm using proper form as far as I know.

Is the pain coming from the hip joint itself - or does it feel like the muscle going over the top of it across the groin?

If its the latter it could be the psoas major. And hip mobility exercises/glute activation will help with that.

This would also explain as why your form is fine but you get the pain, what happens is that because your glutes lie dormant, instead of taking over when it heavy, the weaker muscle of the psoas tries to assist and gets strained.

Yeah, I think you were right. I squatted today, focusing more on warming up enough and activating my glutes, and it greatly reduced the pain. It felt like joint pain, but I guess it was the groin muscle, since you said that I noticed where it was. I thought it was odd since it was just my left side that hurt...anyway, thanks!
