I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Hips rising too fast

Postby tj on Wed Nov 04, 2009 7:01 am

As title says when i deadlift my hips always rise to quickly, and i end up doing a stiff leg deadlift. This only seems to happen when i go heavy or im fatigued, i did some reps with a lower weight and form was no longer an issue, my arse stayed down.

So i don;t think its an issue of flexibility or mobility (ive read all the articles on hip/glute activation) rather i think its a weakness such as weak glutes or hamstrings. I also fagely remember an article by jim wendler which suggested that hips rising to fast could be due to weak quads which help break the lift off the floor. Any thoughts? Are there any exercises you guys have found have helped with this problem?

Cheers guys

oh and here is a vid of my form (sorry about the angle) good bad?

Hips rising too fast can be due to two different reasons -

First one is that you are afraid of scraping your shins & therefore straighten the legs involuntarily before rising up. However, it looks unlikely in your case since you say this happens only at heavy weights or when you are fatigued.

second reason is that you are unable to keep your upper back tight under the load. This will result in the legs straightening before the weight goes up. Watch your upper back next time when you deadlift. Strengthening it is the possible solution.

edit - Sorry, no comments on the video now, can't see it at my workplace.

Your hip height/raising looks fine in the video. Might be your lower back is a bit rounded though. You are shifting MUCH more weight than me though, so I'd wait for someone with a little more experience to chime in.

One thing I noticed is that your starting position is wrong. Put the bar over the middle of your foot, and start with your shoulders infront of the bar. Keep the bar in touch with you shins, you don't have to scrape them to do a good form deadlift.

Also, read Andy Bolton's article on how to deadlift.

Your back is weak which is why your butt comes up so fast.

Work on good mornings, romanian deadlifts and seated rows.

Everything else was fine. You have some solid potential.

Your hips move first because your starting position is wrong. Approach the bar with shins 1 inch away from the bar. Grip the bar and drop your hips until your shins touch the bar. Tighten your back and pull. Extend your knees until the bar passes the knee, then extend the hips.
