though i just skimmed through the topic, i admit bodybuilders did ruin weightlifting somewhat :(

they neutered the barbell row by doing it 45 degrees and the power shrugs by just shrugging...

people just care about looks more than actual strength though, because outside of the weight room, [natural] bodybuilders are more appealing to the eye than powerlifters. unless ofcourse, you look like that guy in the youtube video. however, it'll take you much more years to achieve his physique if you took the powerlifting route. just my opinion.... bodybuilding will get you to a better physique faster than powerlifting or weightlifting and its easier too.

I did bodybuilding routines for 5 years and I look better now than then.

I Want to Build Muscle. Is Bodybuilding Better?
Bodybuilding is lifting weights for aesthetics reasons, without paying any attention to strength. You will get stronger through bodybuilding, just like you will build muscle through strength training. However, the goal of bodybuilding is building muscle in the first place, not getting stronger.

Some of the most accomplished bodybuilders started training for strength using heavy compound exercises before getting into bodybuilding split routines. Examples include: Arnold Schwarzenneger, Franco Columbo, Ronnie Coleman, Johnny Jackson, and many more. Schwarzenneger was a competitive powerlifters for years, his best lifts: Squat 215 kg, Bench 200 kg and Deadlift 310 kg. That's a sick Bench Press/Deadlift compared to his Squat which explains why Arnold's chest and back where his best body parts, while his legs never were that great. The lesson this teaches you is that if you have a weak body part, you should focus on getting it stronger.

If you want to focus on building muscle solely, build base strength first through strength training. Once you can Squat 1.5x body-weight and more for 1 rep, you can switch to bodybuilding to focus on aesthetics only. Chances are, however, that once you'll get strong, you won't even want to switch to bodybuilding anymore. Check the physique of powerlifter Kirk Karwoski, strongman Mariusz Pudzianowski and Michael Sidorychev or olympic weightlifter Ivan Stoitsov. These guys train for strength, not for aesthetics. Most people are satisfied with this kind of body that looks strong, but also is strong.

But then again you quit BB 5 years ago. Obviously hypertrophy has been a "side effect" of your strength training :) Which routines did you do? Body part splits? Don't forget that there's bodybuilding programs out there with linear progression and squats 3 times per week (like HST).

I suggest we all quit this bodybuilding vs. powerlifting vs. strength training argument. It's just as useless as discussing whether Apple or Windows is best. Both have their benefits, and this applies to the different training philosophies as well. Obviously exagerrating bb with only isolation exercises is not good, but that does not mean that there's no need for supplemental exercises in strength training. As far as I can see the only bad influence bodybuilding has is the magazines and websites that promote useless supplements and 5 split routines that will only work for very experienced trainees. And when you really think about, you can't blame them either because many beginners are so ignorant that they believe everything they read and think they've found the magic pill.

This is more or less off-topic but Gregg Valentino (haha, I know) acutally has some wise words regarding the last part I wrote. It's mostly humourus but he actually has some good points:

good rant from Valentino. He's a bit of a dick, but he's making great points here. Applies to everyone- bbers, plers, recreational lifters.

As insane as he makes himself look, as weird as he physically looks, he has to be the wisest body builder I've heard talk about body building.

Why am I posting at 3 in the morning? My body hasn't told me to go to sleep yet... :D j/k

My brother tells me that a lot, I don't believe it. Would have lost what I've gained a long time ago if everything came from those bb years only. Besides, people who I trained with say that my body looks different than back then (more traps/back/shoulders/legs/abs, less chest/arms).

We did arnold's routine for several years (oh yeah), tried other stuff too.

I think you misunderstood me. What I meant is that the last 5 years of strength training has given you more muscle mass, in addition to the bodybuilding you did at first. I disagree with your brother. It's obvious that 5 years of weightlifting will cause your body to grow.

And yeah, I recognize myself in the results you got from bb. My arms grew a lot, but cable pull-downs, rows and smith squats didn't do anything for my back and leg development. But then again it's possible to bb with compound exercises, and some people are even lucky enough to get results from all the cable work.

Well whether the author of that was joking or not, it came out to be pretty funny to me. Basically everything he is criticizing is actually a good point to follow. It did raise some emotions so I will definitely use my discretion.

I thought of the original author's message as one that can show someone wanting to hit the iron has a lot of obstacles ahead of them and how the can't do it to impress anybody. Bodybuilders probably think we are crazy for not wanting to feel the "pump" and we think they are crazy for it. It takes all kinds to make the world go round.

Lost a few brain cells after reading that one. Too many things wrong with that blog, I hope it was meant as a joke but it probably wasn't.

it's not cool to start a thread just to bash a style you don't particularly agree with...open your mind and find the positive you can take from other training styles and incorporate that to fit your personal goals...lose the negative.
