I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

I live in Hokkaido Japan, close to Siberia. I wanted to do some kind of training. I had tried before but had never started properly with the basics, even a professional trainer at a gym in Vancouver, Canada started me on a boring Smith routine that led nowhere.
In August, I googled pull-ups! It led me to Stronglifts. I read the book I could see the logic of the contents. The next day I did the workout. Have not looked back since. Thanks to Medhi for a great resource! The forum allows the workout to be modified with advice from others who have been there. So far I love this workout. I could not do one pull-up, now I am working on 3X5. Near my home I have to do Zercher squats, when I train in a big gym power rack squats are easy. I think Zercher squats are similar to Box squats. I had to move from Inverted rows to Barbell rows, coz all the clowns plug up the Smith rack(where I did the rows). Japan is a saftey obsessed country so most people stick to the Smith machines so there is never a line for the Olympic bar!

I was cleaning out my bookmarks and found this site. I assume I saved it a couple of years back for tips on my technique. I have worked out on and off for the past 7 years or so. I'm in pretty good shape but thought I'd give the stronglifts beginners 5x5 a go to see if I could make some steady improvements.

I am a member at Scoobysworkshop.com, and have been taking weight lifting seriously for about 4 and a half months. I have seen great increases already and I'm dedicated to progressing myself

I found this site whilst looking for the correct form for the deadlift. I do a three day split twice a week, with all compounds and a couple of isolation exercises in there if I feel I need them. I wanted to incorporate the deadlift as well. I also have started doing front squats (don't have a power rack or access to one yet) and have to clean the weight, carefully, up from the floor to perform the exercise.

I can see that there is a wealth of information here, and when I showed the link to a friend on the above site, he said it seemed legit and that the information looked solid. I respect that member greatly, so decided to sign up.

Hope to be around for a long time to come :D

I was looking for information on Saunas and weight training. My friend at the gym (who smokes cigarettes) was telling me that using a sauna after weight lifting is "very bad" so I have been trying for days to find anything to back up his statement..... so far empty handed :)
but I digress

I decided that my current habits aren't getting me anywhere and what I need is lots of hip strength plus all around power and balance.
After looking over the site and finding that it was indeed free to download the book I decided to give it a try. I will start on tuesday. Never done deadlifts before but I'll be starting light and work on form.

I will continue to use the sauna, as I have found nothing but + information. Stay hydrated!

I was searching for information regarding the Anabolic Diet. I stayed on because of SL 5x5. I had no direction with my workouts, although I was doing the main lifts due to a recommendation by a friend, but didn't know why, and didn't know how to progress. SL 5x5 made a lot of sense.

Am now benching 85kg and squatting 130kg and feel ther is alot more in me . Who knows where I'll be in 6 months time. Real big hopefully.

I was browsing on another forum and came across a weightlifting thread where someone suggested stronglifts as a good starting point for beginners. I decided I might as well click on the link and since then I've been impressed and started the program. I was interested in what people did as part of weightlifting and whether it worked for them cause and until I came across stronglifts I had been trying to stay 'fit' by doing things like running every few days, attempting the 100 pushups program, doing crunches and bicep curls, all of which was great at making me tired after doing a bizillion reps. But I realised I wasn't really improving strength-wise or appearance-wise as I was simply increasing my ability to do more reps and I wasn't consistent with my training.
The way stronglifts was laid out on the site was easy to understand, direct and very effective in making me understand how one grows stronger, gains weight, loses weight, cuts down or whatever it may be through weightlifting and a healthy lifestyle. I'm very thankful to Mehdi and his generosity in letting anyone with access to the internet view his valuable words for free! :D

Sister showed it to me. As my interest in lifting grew I came to this site more and more. Pretty much no more or less complicated than that.

And oh, the place is moderated well, that's a big plus.

I started hitting the gym towards the end of my deployment & wasn't liking the 3x10 program my friend put me on. So I jumped online to look for a good strength training program, found SL5X5 & haven't looked back!
I've been on it a month now and, along with a change in diet, have been very impressed with my change in physique.

Hi Everyone,
Hope you are all well. Have just started the 5x5 did my first workout A two days ago. I probably have a similar background to many of you- I have tried lots of ways to getfit/stay in shape since stopping sport in my 20s and I'm convinced that 5x5 will be a successful program. I would like to leave a few ideas about getting in shape for the average working man that may help you not make the same mistakes I made:

1) Don't have too many goals at once. Trying to gain weight/mass/strength and get fit for an ironman are counterproductive and will just leave you tired. This is the problem with "split" routines- on bicep and tricep day I didn't feel sufficiently "worked" so would do cardio as well, leading to overtraining, tiredness and giving up. This is why I like this program so much- a full body workout three times a week is both effective and acheivable.

2) The biggest battle is getting to the gym. Chances are once you're there, with a good planned program like this, you'll have an effective workout.

3) Don't feel bad if a workout doesn't go well or you feel you've some left in the tank. It will still contribute to your success and just resolve to focus a bit harder next time.

4) I like training on my own. It sounds silly but I get nervous before group workouts because I feel under pressure to push myself too hard, and I don't like someone else dictating my workout (beyond providing a good framework). On my own I am responsible for my own success and I get time for myself. If you've not had success with group fitness (although plenty do!) consider seeing how you do on your own.

Looking forwards to todays workout, all the best to everyone
