I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

I found this when searching for proper squat technique. I stayed because of Mehdi's know-how and the friendly community.

how did you find stronglifts.com & why did you stay?

Postby Doo » Fri Mar 21, 2008 8:19 pm

I have been wondering just how I found stronglifts.com. I know that it was the result of a Google search but I cannot remember what keywords I searched for. I honestly don't think it was anything to do with lifting. At the time (January 15, 2008), I had just recovered from a fractured clavicle and was ready to restart my lifting routine which had been "fine for me" for the past 20 years. I spent the next several days reading every article on this site as well as some linked ones to ohter sites. I liked what I read so much that I started StrongLifts 5x5 nearly immediately ditching my old routine and never looking back.
I have now read Rippetoe's books Starting Strength, Practical Programming for Strength Training and Strong Enough? I have just started Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. I figured that if Mehdi got some of his ideas from these sources, maybe I should see what I glean from them.

how did you find stronglifts.com & why did you stay?

Postby ToothlessFerret » Sat Mar 22, 2008 2:26 am

I googled something - probably about squats, but couldn't be sure.  Why do I stay?  well, its early days, but I've registered because it does seem to be based on a lot of common sense - it clicks.  Lift big weights, big compound lifts = gains.

how did you find stronglifts.com & why did you stay?

I think I found Stronglifts by googling for gain muscle lose fat or something like that - I had a fair bit of fat I wanted to lose and had read enough from other sites to figure that I'd rather do it by increasing muscle mass than spend forever on cardio machines.
At first I was somewhat skeptical of the "squat is a full body exercise" and "you don't need ab work cos of the squats, oh press, etc" - kind of thought that, well, maybe when you do real heavy weights that might be true, but not for the levels I would be doing. (To be honest, I had to work up to the starting weights suggested in Stronglifts.).
Skepticism disappeared when I actually tried it out - recently started squatting 3x5 and have progressed to about 10% shy of body weight now. Can really feel that it works more than just the quads - and dropped doing those leg curls and calf raises :)
Why I stay here and why this is now my #1 place to look for answers:
1. No bullshit approach, not trying to sell me anything
2. It's a "live" site - not just someone pretending to be god's gift to weightlifters. Mehdi's got a lot of experience to draw on, but there's also lots of discussions and alternative views.
3. Great community (helpful, encouraging)
4. Last, but definitely not least - Mehdi. Publishing a daily blog is hard enough, but to actually answer all the questions on the forums? That's some dedication!
Thanks for all the great work!

to add to my previous post:

  • when I first read stronglifts, I saw that it was written for me: skinny, weak, totally inexperienced. I didn't feel like a feeble intruder in the big boy's barbell club, and it told me that the weight you lift is irrelevant so long as you are learning and using good form, giving it your all, and improving incrementally

  • no psuedo-scientific garbage about supplements, nutrition, muscular-fibrotic-tensile-reverse-hypnotic-plasmo-regeneration. Just a few simple, no nonsense thruths- eat more, lift heavy compound weights, add a little more each time...

• I also was on a different workout routine and was having trouble with some pains in my back and knees and googled ‘proper squat and deadlift
techniques.’ This sight came up and it was one of the only ones I found that one, had actually explained proper techniques for actually doing these
excercises and it had an active owner that was really engaged with people, daily. I liked Mehdi’s dedication and passion.

Thanks, Mehdi.

how did you find stronglifts.com & why did you stay?

I was trying to use Rippitoe's Starting Strength, and was looking for a website that explained it. I stayed because the ebook was thorough and easy to follow. It was exactly what I needed, a no nonsense, easy to understand strength training program. In the 2 months I've been on the program, I've seen more results than with anything else. Thanks.

I was listening to an interview of a 59 year old who was playing college football in the states. He said he stays healthy by strength training. I googled it and found this site. I love the routine, it doesn't take me hours at the gym and I see results.

how did you find stronglifts.com & why did you stay?

A friend of mine gave me a link because I was complaining about how difficult it was to find the most efficient method of strength training.
This website was like taking a pill labeled "Understand Strength Training"; after 30 minutes of reading I had some serious qualitative mind changes.
Also, there aren't a bunch of pictures of Mehdi showing off pecs! I think that makes him more legitimate than other sites.

how did you find stronglifts.com & why did you stay?

I found the site after googling "how to do more pull-ups" and read almost every article. I stayed because of the clean layout, it's easy to navigate and the fact that Mehdi doesn't bloviate about bullshit.

I've been an fitness enthusiest for years, but have never really messed with heavy or olympic lifts, most of my routines have centered around kettlebells, the TRX, and other "functional strength" exercises. I never got into weight lifting because most of the ironheads I knew were only focused on making their beach muscles swell, yet could barely put those muscles to use in their everyday life. Recently, I decided that I wanted to put on a little more mass, so I did a Google search and after sifting through loads of terrible information I found this site and couldn't stop reading. The information here is no-nonsense stuff presented in a way that even a newbie like me can understand. Not only is this the best weight lifting site I've ever come across, this is probably the best fitness site in general I've seen. I started the 5x5 program today and really think that I may have found the perfect addition to my routine.

Found the site by looking for some advice on a home gym. I read the articles on strength training and liked the simple approach of using basic lifts and good technique. I also like the nutrition aspect and eating health versus taking loads of suppliments. Other sites and magazines seem to have a different routine and exercises each month.
